Has anybody been tracking the prices of Leica Cameras over time?

 

i am particularly interested in how they depreciate over time. I no longer remember how much the M8 cost when it was released and so on all the way up to the present model. Plus how are these cameras priced on average in the used market? 

 

Anyone care to post that info. 

 

Its interesting to to discover at what price point it pays to optimally purchase a used Leica.

M8 originally $4795 US at introduction (remember, dollar prices do not include any tax). Increased over its life to 4995, 5495, 5995 (M8.2).

 

M9 introduced at $6995 and stayed there throughout its life (except for special editions, and possibly clearance or currency reductions near its end).

 

I know - I bought both the first week they came out - have the receipts.

 

M240 introduced at $6950.

 

The big problem in comparisons is that currencies have been very erratic due to the 2008 financial crisis and more recent Euro crises, so there have not been smooth depreciation curves. Add to that the fact that the M9 was enormously back-ordered for a year or more, so M8s held their value a bit longer than normal, and M9s could be sold on to anxious would-be owners for $1000 over list price. ( I got such offers for my early-delivery (first wekk available) M9).

 

About all one can say today is that an 10-year-old M8 is still worth about 28% of new value and a pushing-7-year-old M9 is worth about 30%. Plus/minus something for actuations.

BTW - I personally don't pay attention to depreciation (except to offer a helping hand with questions like this one.)

 

As far as I'm concerned - when I walk out the shop door, the value of a camera becomes ZERO - except for the value of the pictures I can take with it.

I kind of agree. The one exception to this is when your M needs to go back to Wetzlar to be repaired. A friend taught me the trick of buying a used one while yours is being repaired, then reselling it when yours comes back.
