jtharvie Posted May 30, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 30, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello All, Long time no post. I am now in possession of my dream kit. 90 2.8, 50 1.4, 28, 2. & M9. My wife and I are off to partake in the 3rd Erocia Britannia in The Peak District weekend of the 17, 18, 19 June this year. We are "Bromptoneering" on our Bromptons so space and weight is an issue. This is likely a once in a lifetime trip. If you were riding the Peaks District which one lens would you take? 28 or 50. I want to travel light. We have some really awesome stops along the way. I am very familiar with the 50 but I have not used a 28 for years. Any suggestions? Should I just suck it up and put the 28 on the camera and the 50 in my cycling shirt and forego fluid packs? We are only doing 30 miles with stops at miles 10, 16 & 24. I have only one kidney so I need to hydrate often, hence the fluid packs. Thanks to one and all. Cheers, John Harvie Winnipeg, Manitoba
Advertisement Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Hi jtharvie, Take a look here 50 Summilux or 28 Summicron for The Peak District Erocia Brittania. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
james.liam Posted May 30, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 30, 2016 (edited) For a long bike ride? Get or rent a Sony RX100 IV and be done with it. Leave the M9 and optics in the hotel room for after the tour. Edited May 30, 2016 by james.liam
FrozenInTime Posted May 30, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 30, 2016 (edited) When out on my Brompton, I normally leave the Leica at home and just carry a Ricoh GR. If the Leica does come, it is in the front bag - I would not carry a camera or lens next to a sweating body without a vapor sealed bag. RoySmith Posted May 30, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 30, 2016 For a long bike ride? Get or rent a Sony RX100 IV and be done with it. Leave the M9 and optics in the hotel room for after the tour. I did a cycle trip in the Loire Valley last September and took the M9, 28mm F2, and 50mm F1.4. I carried them all in a ThinkTank TurnStyle 5 sling baghttps://www.thinktankphoto.com/collections/turnstyle/products/turnstyle-5?variant=1237700151. It worked great. You can see the photos here. https://roywsmith.smugmug.com/Travel/Loiore-Paris-Gallery/ I liked the way I could swing it around to my front to open it and use the camera. It felt secure on my back while cycling and comes with a rain cover - our M9s are not as weather sealed as the M240. MarkP Posted May 30, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 30, 2016 Just take both! 28 Summicron ASPH & 50 Summilux ASPH are my ideal two-lens travel combo.
LeicaR10 Posted May 30, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 30, 2016 Jtharvie...I agree with Mark P above. You have the Think Tank pack that worked well. You have a great camera, lenses...you will regret not having both. I am sure you will find a creative way to make this happen for yourself. r/ Mark C
MarkP Posted May 30, 2016 Share #7 Posted May 30, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I happen to be a kidney physician. I really don't think that the substitution of 300gm of water with 300gm of Leica lens will make or break the function of that kidney. In fact, I don't think that carrying another 300gm of lens will really make that much difference on top of your planned water supplies! pgk Posted May 30, 2016 Share #8 Posted May 30, 2016 I would not carry a camera or lens next to a sweating body without a vapor sealed bag. There are a lot of small rucksacks which hold the main compartment well away from the back and provide an air gap. I also use a very lightweight ''dry bag' to ensure stuff stays dry. A Leica M and 2-3 lenses is about as light as 'serious' gear gets. I'm happy to carry this on my back (+ other bits and pieces) ALL day and don't find it a problem - and if I cycled I might be fitter and find it less of a 'problem' . IWC Doppel Posted June 4, 2016 Share #9 Posted June 4, 2016 I'd take the 50 on your M9 as your familiar with it in any comfortable bag and just pop the 28 in any pouch in your ruck sack if you intend to use both on your trips out Not sure if you will be able to have any drop offs or other chances to swap kit. When I go away I take all the lenses I fancy then just one on the camera for the day. Sometimes 3-4 lenses or more are packed
