farhiz Posted May 23, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'll be travelling to Budapest, Vienna, Prague & Berlin beginning June. I was wondering if I should carry the X Vario or leave it home and take the Panasonic LX100? We'll be staying at a hostel (not too shabby though) in Budapest and at decent hotels everywhere else. Is Budapest or any of the other cities especially dodgy? Any tips you guys may have are welcome.

BAASCH Posted May 23, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2016 If you have a good camera but you don't take it with you when you visit interesting places, what use is it? Get good insurance, and gaffer tape to cover the red logo, and go!

gbealnz Posted May 23, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2016 +2. I took the X-Vario, and M6 to Europe last year. The shots from both are different, but both are wonderful, truly wonderful. Insurance for sure, and just have a good time. Gary
farhiz Posted May 24, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted May 24, 2016 Insurance is a good idea. Never insured my camera when I travelled before but this time I think I'll do it. It's a Leica, dammit.
gbealnz Posted May 24, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 24, 2016 Different country, different policies, but in my case I took (always take) travel insurance. Built into that (here) is automatic cover for cameras up to NZ$2000, with the ability to increase that, at a (slight) cost. In my case the X-Vario was well within that amount. The M6 ditto, and even my M lenses. Never needed it, but comforting to know it was covered. Gary

Seems companies here don't offer cover for stand alone items like a camera — to be covered it should fall under a home insurance policy that covers household effects. Also I was informed that our travel insurance doesn't cover it either. Oh well.

My own Vario is going with me to France this summer, still covered under the one-year VISA gold card warranty on goods purchased with the card. Even if I drop it, it's fully restituted. farhiz Posted June 17, 2016 Author Share #10 Posted June 17, 2016 Happy to report I had absolutely no problems of any devious sort. One thing I did do was to mask the name on the EVF (the gaffer tape (thanks Mandemaker) arrived in New Delhi on the last day from Amazon US), but I left the red logo as it was only because it looked kind of weird with black tape on. All apprehensions dissipated on the first day out in Budapest, with no one paying the least bit of attention to what I was carrying. The tourists are already packing the spaces. First pic (in Vienna) is coming up in the pic gallery. Thanks again to everyone. Cheers.

Manoleica Posted August 23, 2016 Share #13 Posted August 23, 2016 I've traveled the world with a peli case filled with Leica S gear just insure and we'll all be okay IMHO I think Pro's are more aware of things around them and certainly more used to looking after their equipment whilst traveling.. Holiday makers and others who travel less frequently are prone to getting caught up in the moment (like standing up before the plane Stops at the Terminal) and forgetting their stuff... Be Aware and have the proper Insurance.. Saves a lot of Aggro..
jip Posted August 26, 2016 Share #14 Posted August 26, 2016 This is true, but buying insurance for the worth of a Leica X Vario should be very manageable, and gives the best peace of mind.

Digitom Posted September 10, 2016 Share #16 Posted September 10, 2016 Take it! If I would have fear that my camera can be stolen I would not buy a camera. Your camera can be stolen everywhere: near your house or 10000miles away during vacation.
