M8 coffee stain... a question

Hello,

 

My M8 was purchased new in 2008, so its eight now and I've shot around 12k exposures.

I rarely use the screen however yesterday noticed a very feint light brown mark in the centre.

The starting of the coffee stain I suspect :-(

However when I enter the service menu and check the screen with a white background, there is no stain!

Does this mean my sensor is at fault, and not the screen?

I can't seem to see the mark on downloaded images, but I've not had a proper look.

Very strange... any ideas?

Coffee stain CS can exist on some M8. Mine has CS too and disappeared recently.

The sensor is safe , only the screen is touched . It's not reparable by Leica

but that does not stop to take pictures ... in digital

Many thanks to both... I am rediscovering the M8 after 4 months with the M6Ti. Whilst I have the M-E, the M8 is pretty special and is making me question whether or not I should sell the M-E. Lets see, I get it back this Friday, and if I don't feel any love, I'll put it up for sale and cash in, before prices drop too much.

If you like Kodak color , M8 and M9 or M-E (Kodak CCD sensor) are for you in digital M.

As you know I am now back to film  :)

Yes I know...! However having purchased a Pakon F135+ I too am almost shooting film only now... 

But lets see.

I just find my digital images a little too much work, and this is why the M8 as Monochrom works, the files need (almost) no work, and just sing as they are...

MM yes may be practice ...but artistic side not sure ,look at this link * (translated french-english Google)  :

I prefer pores skin (reproduced by grain of film) versus lines - edges of the face and pores skin "smoothed" and "cutting" by camera software , not natural at all IMO

+1 for my M8.2. Seems like this disappearing is common. I would not worry too much about coffee stain then.

 

Did you do anything for it to disappear... or just use it as normal?

How long did it take?

I'm not fussed, just interested.

Did you first notice the stain after a long time, not using the camera?

 

Any idea what may have caused the stain?  Did the camera get very hot, or cold, before you noticed the stain?

Usually it's at the center. From Pete, this may be due to dust which falls

My M8 was purchased new in 2007 with an average use of the camera
(I currently have 5000 triggers)  because I also have 2 analog M
I believe IMO that it is the frequent use of the screen (heat and poor heat

removal ? ) which triggers the CS. Then I cut the screen when I use ... and

one day spot disappeared 

 

Otherwise it is a very good camera being the best of Leica IMO specially in b&w
This is a Kodak CCD sensor and the color is like Kodak Portra  film
ie "vivid"(as said Erwin Puts) and not "neutral" case of the CMOS M240 sensor.

Yes, I like the M8...have two... :p

 

My thoughts on coffee stain...is due to glues delaminating, perhaps some sort of thermal shock, later resettling, and stain goes.

Good it is only cosmetic...

I am waiting to hear if anyone has a permanent stain...after say twelve months???

Other than that a very reliable camera...unless you smash the screen...yikes!

As far as the OP goes...

My 8.2 has never (yet?) developed the CS and has been treated pretty much like any other bit of kit.

 

Before I bought it I read-up quite a bit about the issue and the consensus was that it was (allegedly!) only noticed on cameras made during one particular period (there was no official proof to back this claim up, however). The vast majority of owners reported that the stain went away after 'a while'. Timescales varied enormously from a week or two to well over a year but it does seem like it goes away of it's own accord eventually.

 

One curious thing is that I don't remember reading about any case where someone had the stain arrive and then disappear to report a subsequent re-appearance of the problem.

Mmmm. I wonder Tobey...

I chimp long and use my screen a lot for focus review. I've got used to the screen.  It still shows good information.

So both my M8's get a lot of normal brightness usage..

 

It's good we can keep each other informed, so easily..
