Advertisement Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Hi Tony Mac, Take a look here Is this lens element separation, fungus or something else?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pgk Posted May 18, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 18, 2016 It looks somewhat like 'schneidereitis' which sometimes afflicts some Schneider manufactured lenses - basically this is black anti-reflection paint on the edges of the lens coming off. That said it does't look like paint is coming away; more like it might not ever have been fully covered. If this is the case then it might cause very occasional flaring but is unlikely to do anything else of detriment. Fortunately, it doesn't look like fungus at all to me though. If your lens needs adjustment get the repairer/technician to look at it and give a verdict. These sorts of things do crop up on the forum at times and its difficult to be definitive because glass refraction makes it awkward to determine exactly where the marks are - they look as if they are on the optical part of the glass from your photo, but may actually prove to be on the painted edges as I suggested. Actually handling the lens and moving it whilst watching the spots might reveal their position better.
jip Posted May 18, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 18, 2016 Hey there Tony, As Paul(PGK) above said, it's hard to see on the image what it exactly is. But if the lens doesn't focus fine at infinity (on what camera I'd like to ask) i'd say it's time to have the lens CLA'ed (Cleaned Lubricated Adjusted).
dkCambridgeshire Posted May 18, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 18, 2016 Agree with Paul - likely to be paint degradation on the edges of the lens element and unlikely to cause any image degradation. It's a well known anomaly with older Schneider lenses but the Summilux R is not made by Schneider - I have a 21mm Super Angulon R with a more noticeable edge speckling but it has no effect at all on the image. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/237734-lets-discuss-the-super-angulon/?p=2716289 Regarding not focusing at infinity - are you using an R camera or a non-R with an R lens adapter? If the latter, the adapter could be the culprit. - especially if of 'eastern origin'. dunk
earleygallery Posted May 18, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 18, 2016 I would agree that it looks like paint loss from the edge of the lens element. I have a few older lenses which show the same symptoms (including Leica) but it doesn't affect performance at all. Regarding infinity focussing, which camera are you using? What are you focussing on and at what aperture? Any examples to share?
Tony Mac Posted June 3, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted June 3, 2016 I was using a Leica R6.2, and I haven't developed the film so I don't have any samples unfortunately. I was just looking through the viewfinder and noticed it never really quite reached infinity. I then used it on my digital video camera (a Red Epic Dragon), with a Leica R mount attached, and it focused past infinity. Very strange. Then something weirder happened, I was using it on a job (with the Red) and the focus cam came apart from the rest of the lens. I've since sent it to Steve's Camera in Culver City. Looks like they'll have to do a complete reassembly. Welcome, dear visitor! brandon walker Posted June 3, 2016 Share #7 Posted June 3, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I dont think it looks like lens separation, more like paint loss at lens margin. Also the lens construction doesnt really have any coupled elements on the front group making tha impossible I think. See http://www.marcocavina.com/articoli_fotografici/Leitz_Summilux-R_50mm_1,4/00_pag.htm for a diagram Regards Brandon
