yymca6 Posted May 15, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 15, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did the last update on my M240 and did not use the camera before going away on vacation. I'm back and just found out the camera started numbering at 1. 1st question: why? I did not reformat the card before leaving, just emptied it by erasing all photos on the card with the camera (not on my Mac). 2nd question: is it possible to rename the 703 files without doing it one by one? (on my Mac) 3rd and last question: can I change the settings in the camera to follow the initial numbering? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 Hi yymca6, Take a look here File numbering reset after update. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
FeralCoton Posted May 15, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 15, 2016 I just noticed the same thing and was about to ask. Mine reset the number as well. That is annoying. I didn't reset the numbering either Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
marchyman Posted May 15, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 15, 2016 Yes, this update for some reason reset numbering. At least it did so on my M 262. When I saw that happened (I checked --- sometimes being paranoid is a good thing) I put the memory card in my computer and copied the last image I took back to the card. Putting the card in the camera and snapping another shot reset the numbering to where I wanted it. 2nd question: is it possible to rename the 703 files without doing it one by one? (on my Mac) 3rd and last question: can I change the settings in the camera to follow the initial numbering? Batch rename is built into your Mac. See this link: How to Batch Rename Files on Mac OS X Easily from Finder Use the "Format" option and pic "Name and counter" with the counter "after name". Set the Name to "L10" or whatever and the counter to your start value. The mac seems to use a 5 digit counter which I why I suggest a name of L10 instead of L100, etc. For your third option do what I did or take a picture, change the name of the file to what you want in your computer, then take another picture.
yymca6 Posted May 15, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted May 15, 2016 Glad to see the reste had nothing to do with wrongdoing from my part :-) Thanks a million for your answers. It was very easy to rename the files. I did it first on copies I had on my HD. It worked fine and real fast. Then I did it straight on the card. Slower but worked as well. Then I took a picture with the same card and voilà! Back to normal. Many thanks to you Erfahrener.
bocaburger Posted May 25, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 25, 2016 If you don't have images on the last card you can look in your HD storage for the last number and set it in the camera's menu.
hoppyman Posted May 25, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 25, 2016 Since I like to avoid duplicate series with different cameras using the L1xx folder naming convention, I have used L100,101, etc in different bodies. I kept the working SDHC card aside with at least 1 file still on it L103 15 etc etc. after the firmware update I set the camera folder numbering to L103 000 etc and reinserted the SDHC card with existing file. That continued the sequence flawlessly. I am not sure whether the step with setting folder name in camera before resuming with working card was actually necessary. I just like to continue the series too as a convenient reminder of how many exposures I have made with that specific body.
Swistak Posted May 25, 2016 Share #7 Posted May 25, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) No issues at all in my case. Before updating, I saved my profiles on the normally inserted sdhc card (as the users were told to do in Leica's update instruction) and reloaded them afterwards. Although profiles are imo not linked to file numbering, maybe this made the sequence continue.
lct Posted May 25, 2016 Share #8 Posted May 25, 2016 Better doing your firmware updates with a separate card folks. When it's done, switch off the camera, remove the firmware card, insert the normal card and switch on the camera. Never got numbering issues this way so far.
AndrewDD Posted May 25, 2016 Share #9 Posted May 25, 2016 I've noticed that the number resets after about 10,000 anyway.
lct Posted May 25, 2016 Share #10 Posted May 25, 2016 (edited) Yes that's what the M240's manual says page 216 : « Within the folder, the individual pictures are given continuous numbers up to 9999 unless a the memory card in use already contains a picture with a higher number than the last number assigned by the camera. In such cases, the numbering used on the card is continued. If the current folder contains picture number 9999, a new folder is created automatically and the numbering begins again at 0001. » Edited May 25, 2016 by lct
hoppyman Posted May 25, 2016 Share #11 Posted May 25, 2016 yes, I keep two small capacity cards that I have just for firmware updates. I like to keep the folder structure as simple as possible on working cards too, that is only one folder. I also like to preserve the overall actuation count as there is no way to extract that any longer.Putting back the working card with an exposure on it will continue the count from there. The last digit of the folder number for example L100 is effectively the first digit of a maximum sequence from L100 0001up to L100 9999 of course. If the count was not continued from L101 0001 you would have duplicate file names. So just remember to check every 10,000 frames or so if you want an unbroken no duplication sequence! bocaburger Posted May 26, 2016 Share #12 Posted May 26, 2016 I changed the file naming in my M240's from L to S (silver) and B (black) so that if an issue cropped up, like a pixel line or whatever, I could easily know which body it was.
