Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 10, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 10, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was asked by Jaapv to show some comparisons between shooting with a Hasselblad 503 CW Film Camera and a Leica S. Below are some shots form my shoot on Sunday with the lovely Yuuki. Personally i loved shooting her with the Blad, it was more deliberate and I felt I had more of a rapport with her as it was more than a case of just snap snap snap but more of a waiting game…………I enjoyed that and Yuu seemed to enjoy it also. Anyway below is the first picture , what do you guys think?? 503 Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Hi Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS, Take a look here Leica S verses Hasselblad 503CW. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
A miller Posted May 10, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 10, 2016 Big league vs little league, IMHO
jaapv Posted May 10, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 10, 2016 I do think you had a slight backfocus problem in the second shot. Awaiting some more
Jeff S Posted May 10, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 10, 2016 Only the film pic has display framing and signature....and good focus (along with better composition). That's cheating, Neil. Jeff
Mikeleica Posted May 10, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) Looks like you either needed a gold, silver reflector or a small kicker of some form to put some light on her face, especially in the color one, there is no light in her eyes. And I agree with Jeff, one is black and white, the color one probably should have been converted to be the same. Glasauge Posted May 10, 2016 Share #6 Posted May 10, 2016 Guess Neil loves his Blad - and didn't want to give his Leica S a chance?

Guest Benqui Posted May 10, 2016 Share #10 Posted May 10, 2016 I like both of your last b/w versions. And of course it will be always be a very subjective decision, there is no wright or wrong, no better or worse. To me it is a decision from the heart and of course a S can never ever compete with the feel of a Hassi. Just hear the "bump" when you press the shutter or when you look through the viewfinder, this is camera porn
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 10, 2016 Share #11 Posted May 10, 2016 It's only the first time I have shot this camera in anger since getting it a week ago. I did a couple of test shots when I first got it but Sunday was the first real try at shooting the Blad. I'm just chuffed to bits that I got pictures to post and chuffed that I took the picture, developed it and scanned it. On Thursday I will print my favorite in the darkroom and hang it on a wall

A miller Posted May 11, 2016 Share #13 Posted May 11, 2016 A couple more Ilford HP4+ Yuuki-(38).jpg Leica S Neil's_Photography_May-08,-2016_NDW068941.jpg these are not apples and apples as the film shot is a bit over exposed and could use some dialing down of the exposure or highlights in order to introduce the right amount of midtones... Jeff S Posted May 11, 2016 Share #14 Posted May 11, 2016 It's only the first time I have shot this camera in anger since getting it a week ago. Seems you reserved the anger for the developing end, not the shooting end. Nice start. I'm almost ready for you next adventure. Jeff

Obviously not apples and apple as one is film and the other digital. Yes the film shots were ~1 stop over and I know I need to practice my PP skills more, but to be honest I am chuffed to bits with them

I know what you were trying to do and applaud the efforts. I just think that you sold the second film shot short a little. There is SO much potential in the tonal range using the most basic tweaks in LR (and don't give me that BS about not having the requisite PP skills). I am not suggesting anything complicated - hell I can't even use PS.
adan Posted May 11, 2016 Share #17 Posted May 11, 2016 Looks like you figured out how to compose in a square. To be fair, I don't really consider the Leica S to be medium format. Bigger than 35mm, sure - but comparing 30x45 to 56x56, there are subtleties in how the focus falls off and other effects that just aren't the same. In these particular shots, the 6x6 seems to have more "presence."
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 11, 2016 Share #18 Posted May 11, 2016 I'm really struggling to focus the S in the studio with dim lighting....... Looking at some of my shots on the LCD I missed a bunch:(
