On Aug. 8, 1956 a cart similar to this one got only partially engaged into the cage at the lowest mine level and on its way up broke an oil pipe, a high voltage cable, the telephone cable and a compressed air tube.

This immediately started a fire cutting off the cage access and the communication link ... coal miners were trapped.

The head frame casts its shadow on the ID plates of the 262 coal miners who lost their life as a result of the fumes and carbon monoxyde generated by the fire.

This is the worst coal mine disaster in Belgium.
