New 28mm Elmarit vs previous version -- hood and performance

Thinking of getting the 28mm, but am unsure about the new metal lens hoods—which on the Elmarit looks quite long/large compared to the previous plastic hood. I actually like the plastic hood and lens cap on my 35mm Summicron ASPH (both size and function), so was wondering if any of you with the newer version could comment on the difference between the two. Does the new hood block part of the viewfinder?

Thanks!

I'd go with the lens only because of its small size and the hood makes it overkill. The previous version is the sweet spot, IMO.

Have you been able to compare the previous 28 Elmarit to the newer ASPH version? I'm thinking of picking up the previous v4 instead of the ASPH, but don't want to regret it (specifically I'd love decent sharpness all across the frame at 2.8)

Based on every review I have read, you want the new ASPH version.  It is quite affordable by M glass standards to begin with; why not go that route?

Trying to fit another 50 Lux (an ASPH this time) into the budget at the same time, so if I can save a few pennies, I might as well. :) Thanks! I'm trying to find some reviews of the non aspherical 28 Elmarit...

I haven't tried the V4 and Insee absolutely no reason to do so. Even next to my 28 Cron I've found the elmarit asph to be very appealing due to its size alone. I needed a lens that was unobtrusive and that would make me want to carry my camera everywhere and to be able to fit it in my jean Jacket pocket. That's the lens.

Sorry but talking about hoods the old Summicron28 had a trunk of a hood. I did not own it anymore, with regret. The new hood actually convinced me to come back to this angle resell. It is considerably smaller and just the way it needs to be. You can't compare here thing with the asph35 or the elmarit28, these or other lenses and this was not what the question was about.

BTW: the microcontrast has been enhanced a lot, so that it is even more appropriate for street photography than the former version

I've ordered one as well but i don't expect its hood to be any more efficient than those of 21/3.4 asph, 24/3.8 or 35/1.4 FLE which are almost useless to prevent flare IMHO. Great hoods to reduce bulk and/or VF blockage if any but that's just it. YMMV.

JM Hughes at Leica Mayfair reckons the pre-aspheric 28 2.8 was optically one of the best of Leica's lenses and the 28 Summicron would not be superior. That was my finding when I bought an unused Summicron at a marked-down price. It was completely out of focus, incidentally: so much for quality control! But even when Malcolm Taylor sorted it out I still kept the Elmarit. The filter size is E46 rather than 49mm.

I know the OP was about the 1st and 2nd versions of the 28/2.8 ASPH, but since he centers on hoods, my experience with the V4 pre-ASPH elmarit (e46) is that it is so immune to flare even with bright point light sources in the frame, that I only use the hood to protect it from knocks.

Thanks for your responses everyone. My original question was about hoods only because there aren't good pictures of the new lens online, and I was interested in any hands-on experience. Anyhow, I bought a used Summicron ASPH instead, which I'm going to try using without its incredibly large hood that blocks a huge portion of the finder.

It's a lovely lens and a good deal now secondhand. Love it on my M9-P and MM1, I use it with the 12466 hood

Congrats! In my opinion the very best choice (have them both). And of course... and as IWC also kind of states, the 12466 hood should now also be traced down... Got one myself quite coincidentally and very happy about it.
