Lens cap for 35-70 F4 Vario-Elmar

I have a 35-70mm Vario-Elmar F4 that has the correct hood but missing the front cap.  With the way the front element recesses, it's not ideal to use a 60mm standard cap so am trying to find the correct cap that fits over the hood.  Diameter of the hood is 73.6mm.  Leica only lists the hood in the 'accessories' for this lens, not the number of the proper cap.

Can anyone help with the part number?

Thanks!

According to the Leica Spare Part Service the original cap (14233) is not available any more. L

As an alternative the normal E60 snap on lens cap could be used for the Vario Elmar.

I just received this answer from Dominik Debert at Leica Vienna Shop.

Thanks.  The E60 caps are not a good choice if you have the hood attached, since the optical cell retracts when the focal length or focus is changed, and there is really no clearance for the 'tabs' on the E60 lens cap.  I'm going to try the Kaiser 74mm push-on cap, which might fit the hood OK.  I'll let you know when it arrives.

Thanks!

D'oh! Didn't read the thread carefully.

To still contribute, after a while I found that the ridges on the inside of the slip-on cap wore thin, causing the hood to lose its grip. A strip of gaffers tape on the inside has worked well for a year or so now.

Cheers,

Jon

Some  camera  shops   have  a  box  of  odd  caps  and it   can  be  worth  looking   through  those  odd   boxes.  You   may   find  something  to   do  the  job , or  even  the   genuine item . I  use  the  odd  boxes  for   caps  of Colourplan  lenses.

D'oh! of course now why did I not think of that! That will fix the loose cap on my 50mm R, thank you!

For the purposes of having this information in one place.....

The Lens Hood for the 35-70 F4 Vario Elmar R ( Leica model number 11364) is Leica P/N 12437. The hood is screwed into not the 60mm filter location, but the inside of the focusing tube of the lens. It has a thread diameter of about 65mm. The hood is reversible for storage. When reversed, it screws into the lens as well.

If you wish to use an easily to get snap cap to fit on the Hood, in the reversed position it uses a 62mm snap cap ( the cheapo ones).

The previous post states that a 72mm snap on cap will fit the hood when it is in the regular, mounted position.

The correct lens cap from Leica is a deep, soft plastic, push on cap. Leica Part Number 14233. It is marked A74, so presumably is a 74mm deep cap. It fits over the lens focusing tube ( widest diameter of the lens). The hood must be removed to use this cap.

Note that the 12437 also is the correct hood for the 28-70 F4 lens .... (Lens model number 11277

Note that if you are purchasing this lens, try to get the cap and hood with the lens. They are both quite hard to find on their own.
