jmahto Posted April 25, 2016 Share #4 Posted April 25, 2016 Nice.. I hope she is at friendly distance. The elephant doesn't seem like a full adult. Mom could be around.

stuny Posted April 25, 2016 Share #7 Posted April 25, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Delightful. In Botswana Barbara was in the outdoor shower when one this age ran to catch up with the distant herd, passing within a meter or two of her. She was startled.
jaapv Posted April 26, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted April 26, 2016 Actually we have been sniffed over twice, once by an adolescent bull, once by an ancient Matriarch. Problem with that situation is that one cannot spook the Elephant by raising a camera and clicking it, not even thinking about changing lenses from 400 to 12 mm... Both occasions were fully in the wild. Real close contact is possible with the Presidential Herd in Zimbabwe who will check your pockets for peanuts and with Elephant Camp in Livingstone, Zambia where you can do relatively affordable Elephant bush rides on rather affectionate Ellies. But those are completely habituated animals, as opposed the the one in the photograph.
Iduna Posted April 29, 2016 Share #9 Posted April 29, 2016 Jaap, very nice and exciting. Good to see human beings and elephants and friendly terms. Delightful sight and they vivid eyes of the animal is touching. I just listened today to a new report on the ivory problem and more or less successful strategies to fight against poachers and criminal gangs.
