I just got a new iPhone with the Lightning conector last week. So I bought the Camera Kit (http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJYT2AM/A/lightning-to-sd-card-camera-reader?fnode=97) which has a SD card reader with the idea of backing up my cards during downtimes on shoots.

 

It all works.

 

 

The idea is that I can now shoot RAW and Jpeg, download everthing to my phone and with an app called Photosync (there may be better on the App store) I now can upload just the Jpegs to my Dropbox account. This is a great way to backup on the go. I am shooting a wedding at the weekend (I am not a wedding shooter and I hate shooting weddings , but hay I gotta make a living) and so this saves me having to run to my laptop and download.

 

 

The only issue is the App works within a Geo Fence location. So when I go out of the are I am in the upload stops. My work around is to keep pushing the button on the app to keep it live. If anyone know of a better app, one that will only upload the Jpeg and not the Raws, please let me know.

This is news to me. The camera connection kit used to only work on iPads, not iPhones. Must have been a change in the software. I'm off to try it! Thanks

with the 9.3 update you can now upload all to your iPhones.

 

AFAIK there is no way to just upload the jpg's.

 

I do not use Geofence-- but there is a setting for auto upload to dropbox... which I use.

Yes, the Dropbox upload function is great, but I would like to seprate out the Jpeg for upload only. To save on data on my phone bill. The Photosync app (https://photosync-app.com/) can be set up to upload just the jpeg or jpeg and raw, but its auto-upload function only works with Geofenceing. Bummer!

 

One other point is that the SD card reader can skip images it has already downloaded. Of course, only the 12 inch iPad Pro has USB 3 so the upload speeds or just at USB 2 speeds.

a thought just occurred to me-- depending on which camera you are using there may be a simple answer to upload only jpg. . . the Q /T and other Leicas (including the C) have iOS apps which will transmit via wifi jpg's only to the iPhone ...just an idea

Today I got a wireless media hub. You insert your camera's SD card into one slot and a portable hard drive/thumb drive in the other USB slot on the media hub. Then use the local wifi from the media hub to connect with your iphone via an app and transfer your photos from the SD card to the hard drive/thumb drive. This way, you don't need to use data or wifi to save your photos. Or else you can use this as a temporary measure before going to do a full upload via dropbox later. It's a Kingston MobileLite Wireless G2. It's small and light like a portable hard drive. I haven't tested it fully yet. If anyone is keen to know more I can always answer questions or post more information after I test it properly.

Thanks a million. Tomorrow I am shooting a wedding. So my idea is that between the church and the venue (a one hour drive) I can pop the cards into the Apple Camera Kit and the shots will download to the phone. Now on the phone the Photosync app will upload just the jpegs to Dropbox.

 

This means that I will have Raw + Jpeg on the cards, Raw + Jpegs backed up on my phone and Jpegs backed up to Dropbox. So if the worst happens, I have a backup in the cloud.

Just back from shooting the wedding. The iPhone as a back-up really well, with one or two issues. First of all the download speed to the phone is at slow USB2 speeds. The second issue is the import function of course keeps the phone awake so with about 36GB for the wedding, it used about 41% of the battery and the Photosync app used another 20% of the battery and Maps used 20% (well I had to know where I was going)! So I just got finished and back to the car with the back-up and upload to Dropbox done when the phone died.

 

So as I do not normally shoot that much on any shoot and I don’t generally need so much GPS assistance I am quite happy with the setup.

Is there some trick to import so they don't look like this? Wtf.

 

 

I'm trying to import to my IPhone 6S +. Is it possible that DNG file conversion is not fully compatible on my device using the card reader?

The iphones photos app doesn't redo the thumbnails; you need something like Lightroom mobile to see the full picture.

Yes, as you know IOS does not support raw files, however the Apps that I use that can support RAW and open a full sized preview are PhotoRaw and Photogene 4.  Of course the apps are not a replacement for Photoshop on a computer, but they do help.
