EdwardM Posted April 17, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 17, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) hello all! Going to Miami for one week with family and can not decide which camera to take with me - LQ or LM (240). My all around M lens for M240 is 35 Summicron. Thank you for any advice. Advertisement Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 Hi EdwardM, Take a look here Q or M for one week on Miami Beach. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 17, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 17, 2016 So take both.... As it wholly depends on your personal preference (of the day?) Should you want to do fast reportage/street in Disneyland, the Q might be more practical, should you want to do Alligator portraits in the Everglades a longer lens on the M might be advisable... In the end, the functional difference between an M+35 and Q is quite small.
ECohen Posted April 18, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 18, 2016 (edited) I would take both... M during the day, Q in the evening after a glass of Red wine....or two...but thats me. What will you be doing with your family/photography? Just curious ...you own both cameras. What are your preferences for each? How do you choose at home which to use? Will you be shooting anything differently in Miami than you shoot at home? Edited April 18, 2016 by ECohen
enboe Posted April 18, 2016 Share #4 Posted April 18, 2016 Q. The Q is capable in your hands and in the hands of others, and you have less gear with you to worry about. Make the most of your family time, and let the photos be what they are.
EdwardM Posted April 18, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted April 18, 2016 So take both.... That was my idea as well to take both. Basically, i was also thinking to use M durring daylight and Q for low light time and some close-ups and my son. Being autistic he cant sit longer than half a second so its almosut impossible to catch him by M in manual focus mode. Fast AF of Q should be fine for catching autistic kids:) Both cameras are not properly weather sealed so i think that sand from the beach is a bit dangerous for both options. So from that point of view there is no huge difference in terms of usability on the beach.
jaapv Posted April 18, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 18, 2016 The M is adequately weathersealed, even the lenses, despite some internet chatter to the contrary. The Q as well probably; I would have to look it up. Sand can indeed pose a hazard, even on weathersealed cameras, although I have been using them in dust and sand without problems all my life. Why not get one of rubberized point-and-shoots for the purpose? They are not that expensive.
Firefly Posted April 18, 2016 Share #7 Posted April 18, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why not just take what you would like to take, it is your mind and choices, surely not for anyone else to decide, cheers Rob
Peter H Posted April 18, 2016 Share #8 Posted April 18, 2016 Which did you buy first, and what made you then buy the other one? Somewhere in there may be an answer to your dilemma.
EdwardM Posted April 18, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted April 18, 2016 Which did you buy first, and what made you then buy the other one? Somewhere in there may be an answer to your dilemma. M9+35 Lux was the greatest combo. it was my first set up. Then, M240 with 35 Lux / Cron. . The Q was the latest purchase - more for low light snapshots and my family pictures.
bocaburger Posted April 18, 2016 Share #10 Posted April 18, 2016 Maybe I'm misunderstanding something. Do you have assorted lenses with the M240 or just the 35mm? If the latter then I would bring just the Q for all the reasons you mentioned previously. A teeny bit of cropping and you've got 35mm FOV. The only reason I own an M is because the lenses interchange and I can travel with 3-5 of them.
Peter H Posted April 18, 2016 Share #11 Posted April 18, 2016 Yes, given all you've said, I the the Q is your best option.

Rick Posted April 18, 2016 Share #13 Posted April 18, 2016 I'd take the M + R-adaptor for the 280/4 + 2xAPO extender for beach shots! Rick
bocaburger Posted April 18, 2016 Share #14 Posted April 18, 2016 I do have 28 Lux / Elmarit, 35 Lux/Cron and 50 Lux I see. Still, without knowing your style it's hard to advise. I will tell you that streets are a lot wider than in most European cities and towns, if that helps you make a decision.
jlindstrom Posted April 18, 2016 Share #15 Posted April 18, 2016 for a family vacation where photos are for memories more than art, take the Q. It works a treat for such and if you do want some art photos, it'll be great for the art deco houses in the evenings as well. Main thing is to enjoy your family holiday, not to live through viewfinder. For my last holiday I packed just the Q. It was great.. for sand activities, swimming & video I had the GoPro hero 4 black. ECohen Posted April 18, 2016 Share #16 Posted April 18, 2016 "The Q was the latest purchase - more for low light snapshots and my family pictures." Your quote tells you which camera to take. Take the Q
Adam Posted April 19, 2016 Share #17 Posted April 19, 2016 I would take the Q and M + 50Lux. The Q is wide enough to get some nice street shots plus the shutter goes higher than M, useful in bright light. However, 28mm is to narrow for capturing the Art Deco buildings head on, for that you need 15mm (attached pic done with 15mm VIII from Lumis Park). If you like to do beach shots of people in the afternoon/dusk, I found that a longer focal is better (attached pic beach at dusk 75mm summicron, slight crop). Just make sure you are insured. I had two cameras stolen in Miami Beach. Welcome, dear visitor! emilspix Posted April 20, 2016 Share #18 Posted April 20, 2016 Hey edward, Actually live in South Florida and own a Q myself. Like everyone else stated, I would take the Q and let the camera be transparent to what's truly valuable, and that's spending time with the fam ... I would take an extra battery tho lol
Soden Posted April 20, 2016 Share #19 Posted April 20, 2016 Hmm you have a 28lux, which is faster than the lens on the Q. So why did you buy the Q? The answer to that question should be the answer to which camera you should take.
NickR Posted April 20, 2016 Share #20 Posted April 20, 2016 If you're taking pics of your family at the Miami zoo or aquarium, the Q will do nicely. If you're taking pics of the animals at those places, the Q won't have the reach for the most part. I guess I'm saying take both. If you have a concern with security however, take the Q. You never have to leave it in your car or hotel room.
