Rumor about possible support on Capture One 9

Let me elaborate: There have been requests for C1 support to Leica S, but since C1 and PhaseOne are linked, other MF cameras are not supported, as they are seen as competitors. Other cameras, including Leicas are supported as they are not regarded competing. I have heard that Leica SL is supported only because someone loaned a SL to C1. I would assume there is not a strong relationship between C1 and Leica, you may remember that the M8 was originally shipped with C1 but Leica changed to Adobe and LR later.

Personally I would love to have the S supported, and I think it is not serving C1/P1 well that they exclude it. C1 actually works OK with S files, but you only have the DNG Neutral profile as a starting point.

I agree! C1 is just so much better in handling of RAW files... (DNG I am sure as well)...

I get some pretty funky colour in C1 on S files... not sure how to fix it...

The S007 files can be opened and processed in C1v9, using the default built-in Adobe DNG profile. The colours are actually not bad at all; I'd say often comparable to what I get from LR CC. But of course there are no lens profiles in C1 and I am not sure what else is lacking in terms of detail, DR, noise etc. Interestingly, when processing files form the M, I can see only a "Summicron 50" profile, without even stating which Summicron 50. So is the S "not supported" and the M "supported"? Or is it all just marketing talk, with Phase One proudly "not supporting" a competitor's "MF" camera, while they are actually "sort of supporting" it or rather "not being 100% able not to support it" as Leica uses an open standard DNG profile that Phase One have to support by default? Whichever it is, Phase One should just stop being silly and support the S properly. It is bad enough for me to deal with the confusing catalog implementation in C1. I have upgraded all the way to v9 despite that but I swear I will not pay for the next upgrade unless the S is officially and fully supported.

By making your own colour profile, using a Color Checker Passport.

How do you do that in C1, jaapv? I have tried to research it, and it seems to be extremely complex, requiring some additional sw and code. If you can explain, it would be greatly appreciated.

Shoot the color checker then use auto adjust to create a profile..like this > https://robertharringtonstudios.wordpress.com/2010/11/11/the-x-rite-color-checker-passport-and-capture-one/

This is fairly old, but might still work, have you tried it on the latest version? But it does not create a profile for the camera, it has to be repeated for each import? Or can it be stored as a reference, and then be used for each import?

I will try it again tomorrow with the latest version of C1P and my 007, it is old but i do use it a lot and yes you have to shoot a color checker for every shoot although if you shoot in a studio y=I think you can use this http://blog.phaseone.com/tweak-the-default-color-look-of-your-camera/

I havent been using C1P as much lately but I will try this out!!

This looks interesting, but: Excuse my confusion, is it implicit in this article that the picture is taken with a camera that is already supported by C1? In that case this is more a "tweak" than a full profile? Can this method be combined with your previous suggestion to create a full profile for a new camera, not supported by C1 (S007)?

Yes, AFAIK just make any further adjustments and then save the profile in the color editor,it doesn't have to be an officially supported camera.

Well, I did it. I imported an X-rite picture taken with the S007, cropped it to cover only the color samples. adjusted white balance with dropper, auto adjusted in C1, saved it as ICC profile.

Slight difference from DNG neutral, a bit more contrast and color punch, but not much.

I could not find out how to make it default for the camera, though, imported images from the S007 still come up with DNG Neutral, and the new ICC profile is stored under "Other"

....and the reason for this is that C1 recognizes the S007 from the EXIF, but you cannot save a new ICC profile for the camera under "Leica" because it is not supported, hence you cannot make it a default profile for the camera.

Just to check this, I took a picture taken with the SL, modified it, chose save as ICC profile, and it comes up with "Leica SL" as camera type in the suggested name, I can add an extension to that, and it will be saved under "Leica" and can be made a default for SL.

When saving a profile taken with S007 it will only be named "GenericDngFile..." or whetever you chose to call it, and it will be saved under "Other", and cannot be made a default for the camera, although it is available after import.

Please prove that I am wrong...

... but believe it or not: After choosing "Set as default for DNG file" for the current profile, and restarting C1, it actually became the default ICC profile when importing pictures from the S007.

Sorry for all the ramblings, it works!

(But to be honest, the difference from DNG Neutral is quite subtle, an in many cases hard to see, so not sure it is worth it, except for the challenge ;-)

There is a fair amount of "save as default for DNG" that will work for Leica S files in C1, but do you want to go down that route? As a puzzle to see what's possible, it can be interesting and fun. As a workflow, I think it's too dangerous. When you have a question, or things go badly wrong, there is no where to turn for help.

Whoops! I took too long posting my reply.

PS: I asked C1's "Image Quality Professor" on his blog about advice. The comment was deleted by the moderator. They obviously want no discussion about the Leica S series and C1.

Thats really Bizarre, how do they expect to sell it as a Lightroom alternative with that approach!!
