Hi all,

I just got my first M camera, went for type 262, and I couldn't be happier - its like nothing I have ever used before and a complete joy to shoot.

I'm looking for any tips anyone can give me on places to buy second hand glass etc, classes or workshops, or general community advice for someone living in Singapore.

Many thanks

Welcome to the forum, and the L club.

I've been to and stayed in SG about 15+ times..... too humid for me lah .

If you haven't already ... I suggest you invest in a camera dehumidifying cabinet.

I had difficulty finding Leica gear in SG apart from the Leica boutiques.

I've travelled all over asia, and HK is the place for any s/h Leica gear,... Tokyo would be second, Seoul 3rd .

Thanks Dugby,

I'm pretty new to all this but been learning (but there is just so much to learn though).

I honestly though those little fridge like cabinets were a silly way of getting people to but more equipment but if i should take it seriously that's good to know...ever since i got into photography around a year ago i've been too easily tempted to buy this or that and thought i was being smart avoiding those - i've brought a tonne of junk i shouldn't already, haha.

Can't help you with tips in Singapore but... Welcome to the forum. It did help me a lot in last two years. You will enjoy it (the cam and forum both). :)

Hi Mr Flea,

There are several stores selling 2nd hand leica camera & lenses around Cityhall area. You can go to Peninsula Plaza (1st floor) or Adelphi mall.

Another option is to go to online local forum Clubsnap.com. There are many people trading their Leica camera & lenses there.

The old and traditional Leica dealer is Cathay Photo, one of the oldest camera retailers in Singapore.  Cathay Photo has two sales outlets:

One at Penininsula Plaza.  Another one at Marina Square.  Both have a wide range of Leica gear.  Close to the Peninsula Plaza outlet there is a shop selling 2.hand Leica gear.  Cathay sells also Carl Zeiss lenses.

Another important Leica resource is Chiif Cameras, at Excelsior Shopping Centre; one of the leading Voigtländer dealers in the world.

If you're looking for used Leica gear, as others have pointed out, the Peninsula area is the place to go. There are, confusingly, two Peninsulas — Plaza and Shopping Centre. They are across the street from each other on Coleman Street. Peninsula Plaza is where the Cathay Photo store is, but you likely won't find deals there. Prices are pretty much standard and they sell new stuff. But there are two little stores next door to Cathay that sell used gear and you'll sometimes find good prices there.

Across the street at Peninsula Shopping Centre are where more of the used shops are — there are a couple on the first floor so you'll want to look around there. A lot of what you'll find are film cameras, but you might get lucky with lenses. Upstairs on the 2nd or 3rd floor is a place called Black Market Camera. They have quite a lot of Leica M bodies and lenses. Again, most are film but glass is glass.

You will also want to check out Adelphi Shopping Centre which is kitty corner to the Peninsulas. Look in the basement level for a couple of stores — one is a Leica specialist but I can't remember the name (it'll be obvious). That's about it except for Funan Centre, which is across the street from Adelphi on North Bridge Road. It's billed as a digital lifestyle mall and you'll find tons of camera shops in there. Almost all are selling brand new stuff. On the first floor is a tiny bookshop with a great selection of photo books and camera accessories — Wotancraft bags, Artisan & Artist straps, Luigi straps, etc. But head over soon because Funan is schedule to be shuttered for redevelopment in June.

Hope this helps!
