Leica Lightroom Subscription Trouble

Before my Q came along I had an annual Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. With the Q came a LR sub so I uninstalled Creative Cloud and  loaded Leica LR. It worked fine and I was a happy LR user.

Now it appears, according to Adobe,  that 3 months later my LR subscription has lapsed and I am being forced  to subscribe to the annual Adobe Creative subscription.

 

Isn't Leica LR subscription indefinite, not just for a trial period? 

Is there a way to check that LR is using my Leica TAN?

 

I searched but Adobe say there is no phone support for my product. 

Worryingly LR has locked up my photo library. Each folder now has a question mark? and I cannot open them.

 

Any know precisely how is the Leica LR supposed to work? Does Adobe not respect the Lecia LR sub if I was already a subscriber?? Is there a way to contact Adobe or the people at Leica who handle the LR subscription?

 

Any other suggestions?

Leica's isn't a subscription for starters.  It is indeed a perpetual license.

 

I am not sure either, but I believe the standalone install may be a different version #, meaning you may be running the "wrong" application.  It sounds almost like you got a 3 month grace period after cancelling your subscription, and then it ran out (?).

 

I believe you'll want to download the binaries from the Leica site and then uninstall/reinstall those.

I had lots of trouble installing the perpetual version of LR6 but was resolved by entering the serial number shown in my Adobe account. If you installation was on as a trial then registering the serial number will unlock for permanent use. If you have already done this then I'm sorry I can't help and my work when my 3 months is up :-(

Why not use this moment then to forget LR and just make the step to Capture One Pro 9 with its superior RAW engine?

I did so because of all the forced subscriptions at Adobe.

I principally refuse to have any of my digital info ransomed into a lifetime long straightjacket of payments with any company.

 

For the rest, COP9 not so terribly different from LR if you are not too deeply 'embedded' with it?

Installing the Leica version of LR borked my Adobe perpetual license for LR6. Adobe "support" was worse than useless; they actually deactivated a bunch of other perpetual licenses. Adobe hasn't spent much effort on supporting parallel installations of subscription and perpetual licenses, with an obvious bias. There is some question in my mind about the differences between the Leica "perpetual" license and an actual Adobe perpetual license. You can go to your Adobe account and see if there is a serial number attached to your LR. Log into Adobe, go to your account, go to Plans and Products, go to Products. This will list all the products and their serial numbers; don't go to Plans. If you have a serial number for LR write it down. Using the TAN code should have generated the serial number.

 

Saying all that, however, something is still very wrong with your installation. Theoretically, the program should continue to work even if you aren't paying the monthly; you just would only have access to the Library module. Is the program not running at all? If it is running, you can tell which kind of license you have by the splash screen at start up or by going to the About under the Lightroom menu. Here is a pretty good link to troubleshooting LR6 installation problems. Down at the bottom are a number of links to various licensing woes: http://lightroomsolutions.com/lightroom-6-perpetual/ One of those suggestions is a trick from Adobe themselves where you have to create a new Adobe identity without a CC subscription, start up LR with that identity and use the serial number when it asks you to license the software for a trial. It's horrible, but it will work. Like I said, Adobe hasn't put much effort into this. Indeed, some users with both CC and perpetual licenses set up two identities; one for each type of license. It's kind of outrageous, but then Adobe is a sad shadow of its former self.

 

If you aren't even getting the program to start, you should reinstall the software as katsanes suggests.

…and would you bloody believe it, tonight I just received a notice that my 'free trial ends in 5 days!' Hopefully this is just a glitch as I also had to do the workaround suggested by deadhead above and my serial still shows on my account. I've now made a note of it just in case it all goes tits.

 

After installing and registering with the serial I then managed to update it to 6.1.1 which is what one needs for Leica Q profile support ( including Camera Raw 9.1) and this show on the startup splash screen whereas before the serial number it said trial. Wish me luck.

 

One thing to add, you cannot change a CC version to a perpetual in any way. You have to uninstall it, create a new Adobe identity and install the trial version which is well buried on their site. Good luck, you may just need it.

The 6.x versions of Lightroom are different from the CC versions.  CC gets new features, for one thing, 6.x users don't.   If you're version as shown on the splash screen and in the About menu item (OS X, anyway) doesn't read 6.5 you don't have the perpetual version.  It might take some email back and forth or some time on the Adobe forums to get things corrected.

 

As for switching to Capture One Pro -- no thanks.  Yes, it might have a better raw engine and certainly has tools that Lightroom doesn't have.  But it is such a pain in the rear for this user that I soon gave up.   It makes a big deal at not being modal -- no develop module equivalent -- but you have to keep switching between various tabs to do things that I find related.  Then there is the lack of the '\' key equivalent to switch between before and after.   No, I do not want a side by side compare.  I want full screen swap back and forth.   Quickly.   Can't do it unless you didn't make any crops or rotations in which case you can use reset/undo to toggle back and forth.

 

I liked Aperture.   Lightroom is usable.   Capture One Pro not.  That is my opinion.  Yours may be different.

That's a glitch, you can always go to your "Manage my Account" and paste your serial from Leica, of course you gotta sign up. I barely use Lightroom though just for slideshow, I use PS/CS6 perfect if you don't process a whole lot of pictures, SilkyPix is good too. If you want something basic Lightroom will do, just to let you know "Nik Collection" is now free from Google, works perfect with PS/CS6.

clear your registry after uninstalling, then install the LR from Leica, or you could've stayed with Adobe CC since LR and PS CC is included.

The problem with Capture One Pro 9 is that Mac users need the latest OS for it to work. Many of us like the OS we have (Mountain Lion for me) and are wary of installing 'upgrades' (re ancillaries, programs etc).

Capture One has a very customizable interface. If you want frequently used tools to be in the same tab, you can put them there in less time than it's taking me to write this. OK, about the same time.

 

If C1 supported the S, I would still be using it as my main processor *and* DAM, although it doesn't shine in the latter job. I wish C1 supported other medium format cameras, but it doesn't so it's off to the hated Adobe with me.

 

As for LR's vaunted History, how do I toggle on and off an adjustment that was made thirty steps earlier in the edit history? Can I reorder them? Should order count so much?

 

Well, I'll figure out a workflow.

My MacBook Pro  is satisfactorily running LR 6.3 Perpetual, according to the Lightroom Drop-down, System Info .  I have never installed any other licensed type of L-R,  and this version was updated from a previous Leica / free version,   with my free version when I acquired the Leica Q.  

So far, to date, no problems, and no warnings of any sort.

 

Today, I have checked for updates and see that Lightroom CC/6 update , March 2016, 339 MB is available.

 

Before I proceed, can someone with similar (good) experience confirm that this is not leading me into the confusing Adobe trap of CC, and that my LR6x will remain  as a perpetual stand alone service without  starting afresh with the possibility of warnings of trial expiry.

This is what is needed to support LR profile for the Q. remember lens profile is embedded in the files and not LR. When you start from a trial of LR it's 6.0 then you can safely update to 6.1.1 and remain perpetual.

All I know is Adobe's latest updates will work for you but not for me. Having said that, what does the update actually give you that you don't have already? Sure, if you have a camera newer than that supported by your current version but if not why bother? I'm not aware of any key new features. As they say, if it ain't broke...

 

I choose not to update my Mac for the same reason and have no intention of buying anymore cameras anytime soon, that is unless Leica release a 50mm Q perhaps

To upgrade to a later perpetual version (you can skip to latest), just go to the 'help' menu and go to 'updates' to get to the Adobe Application Manager.  It's not evident, but as you have the perpetual license, this will allow you to install a later version without getting CC.  I did it after emailing Julieanne Kost from Adobe for confirmation.

 

Of course only you can decide if the standalone version (whichever you choose) works better for you than CC.  A little known difference, not so with LR 5 and prior, is that perpetual users only get new camera support, bug fixes and minor tweaks by going to later iterations of LR6.  CC users, for instance, since LR 6 was introduced, have received a new de-haze tool, the ability to make local black/white point adjustments, new panoramic boundary features, etc.  None of these will apply to LR6, regardless of iteration....one needs to wait for LR 7 to get them, and that's assuming Adobe still offers LR7 as a standalone option.

 

Bottom line....Adobe will continue to make the experience miserable for all standalone users, encouraging them to switch to CC....or eventually no longer giving them the choice.

An update on a previous post. Yesterday I received another e-mail from Adobe saying my 'trial is now over' and offering me to 'join'. Luckily all seems to be working just fine, phew! 

 

Looks like one part of Adobe doesn't link with another, i.e. trial converted to perpetual with serial number.
