nidi Posted March 21, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 21, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello to all... I need help to figure out if it is possible to store my Q pictures on a mobile hard disc when travelling. No PC/ Mac, just the Q, a USB cable and a small hard disc. I've read about Freecom MG Mobile, but maybe it needs a go-between PC/Mac, info is scarce and shops can sell sand in Sahara Any ideas out there, please? Niels... Advertisement Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Hi nidi, Take a look here Q and mobile hard disc. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Herve5 Posted March 21, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) When you connect the Q to a PC or mac, it turns itself into an USB disc (and nothing more : no USB tethering possible for instance). If you have a phone or tablet with the 'on-the-go' capability, you then can load the pictures to the phone/tablet, then remove the phone, connect your external disk instead, and move the pics on it. That's the only process I can see, save finding something that'd be more than just a disk, but would be capable to directly suck in the Q pictures. But from the point of view of the Q, it'll remain passive -just a disk, nothing more. Maybe you'll find a device featuring a disk and an SDcard slot, where you could insert the Q's one and photos could be moved then -but I have no experience of this. By the way, if you have an android tablet (or large phone), bringing DNGs on it allows you to then seriously edit them, with an app like Photo Mate... H. nidi Posted March 21, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted March 21, 2016 Thanks Herve5, I'll try to use the phone/external disk solution. I know there is - or once were, maybe 3 years ago - a mobile disk/device with card slots and a small screen to view all your saved pictures. Forgot the name, though. Never mind, I've got a phone and soon also an external disk. Thanks again for answering
Leica Guy Posted March 21, 2016 Share #4 Posted March 21, 2016 I once owned an Epson P6000 that had the card slots you mentioned. It was for backing up photos and some minor editing if one was so inclined. I sold it thinking that it's easier and cheaper to buy more memory cards. The failure rate of SD type memory cards is extremely low. I have head of one being dropped on a hard surface and it stopped working. It does mean all your images are in one place so as the saying goes, "if you put all your eggs in one basket, watch the basket very well". Herve5 Posted March 21, 2016 Share #5 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) (...) Never mind, I've got a phone and soon also an external disk. Thanks again for answering Be very careful that your phone allows USB on-the-go -and buy the cable... I do carry the normal Q USB cable along with an OTG adapter, straight with the Q... H. Archiver Posted March 22, 2016 Share #6 Posted March 22, 2016 There are a range of portable harddrive backup devices that have SD and CF card slots. I use a Nexto CF with a 500GB internal drive, which I use when on holiday. Recently, Western Digital brought out a My Passport HDD with a built in SD card reader. It will auto-download all card contents for you, and I believe it has bit-for-bit verification.
nidi Posted March 22, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted March 22, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, Archiver, Herve5, and Infiniumguy, it is always good with different ways to go. I usualy bring several empty memory cards and only use them once for future safekeeping. To be extra safe and not sorry I will like to have an additional archiving when travelling. I must take a closer look at the OTG and also Nexto CF ways. I appreciate the good help with my small problem from you all, thank you so much
