SD card bug with Lightroom mobile on Android

Not sure if it's just me but has anyone else tried to use an Android tablet with Lightroom Mobile for processing M240 DNGs?

 

I'm going away and rather than take my MBP, I thought I'd take my Sony Z3 tablet to process a few photos while I'm away. Took my SD card out of my M and put it in the micro USB card reader plugged into my tablet. Opened up the file viewer app and it said the card was empty. Strange, as it had photos on from earlier that day. Put it back in my M and pressed PLAY... No photos to display... dam, I lost some nice pics of the kids. Tried a few times and each time, same thing. I tried another card and it was fine. Photos transferred from SD to tablet and played on the M when reinserted. I even told Amazon my card had corrupted and they sent a replacement.

 

Guess what. The new one was exactly the same. Annoying as it's a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s 64GB, so perfect in the M. The other card is a Samsung 32GB nothing to write home about speed.

 

So it seems I've discovered a pretty bad bug with either the size or speed or something. Just a warning to anyone else if you're thinking of using Lightroom Mobile.

 

Which incidentally is really bloody good. Won't replace a laptop, but for the occasional bit of processing on the move. It really is pretty great. Especially if you sync across your devices.

Some card readers do not support 64G (or larger) cards.   Does your card reader work with the 64G card when connected to some other device?  Also how is the 64G card formatted.  If exFAT does your Android device support that format?

You could flick the switch to write protect the card when putting it in anything other than your camera.

Which is something you should do routinely in any case.

Thanks for the tips. I just tried again but this time with the write protect switch in the lock position. It now works and the DNGs are accessible on the tablet and works again when put back in the M. BUT. Now it moved the DNGs from the DCIM folder into the Android folder that's still created on the card. It's strange that the M can still read the file even though they're outside of the native root folder of the camera. Tried with the Samsung card and it's still fine. I think it's either Sandisk or the 64GB size thats the issue. I'll try another smaller Sandisk card later.

 

I guess I should just use the 32GB Sammy card on holiday and sacrifice a bit of performance for the sake of keeping my photos safe.

So just tried the process with the Sandisk card again and again it's showing an empty folder. I give up. I'm going to leave it at home and take the Samsung card and a few smaller ones as back up. I can't that inconsistency like this!!

I presume the android folder on the card was created in a previous test before you locked the card; this won't happen with your new procedure. I always format in camera after copying the images to my computer but I don't do that after copying them to a tablet. I hope to change this behaviour when I have more faith in the reliability of Lightroom on the tablet.

I have an Android tablet that will not use cards over 32gb.  I am not sure if it is the tablet of the Android operating system

Hi Dannybouy, did you try rescue software on the card. You can download Sandisks own rescue software for your card and give it a try. One important thing is to not shoot anything on the card before trying to rescue it.
