Adam,

yes, quite so. I can imagine how the results will be and hope you'll share it on "the other" forum.

Thanks, Iduna.  It will be showing up in the I Like Film thread of this forum, and also perhaps my Flickr page, in due course... :)

I had to come back to this because I like the subject very much.

I am curious though, why did you decide to crop?

Ece

Hi Ece - thanks for your question.  My rendition of this scene is to focus on the bridge and interposition of the Empire State Building.  The rest of the frame was filled with mere bits and pieces of the Brooklyn Bridge from where I was standing, all distracting from the composition that I was after.

The shot was really just a test shot and due to the light conditions, film type and continuous motion on the bridge the shot did not come out crisp.  And the crop only increased the grit.

My goal is to retake this photo with a 6cmX9cm size frame with my old Linhof, probably with Tri-X and at a time when there interesting cloud formations.  The larger size film and the focal length of my old Zeiss lens will make this needed crop perfectly feasible.

As for the chosen aspect ratio of 16x9, I think it works well with the length of the bridge, and I think the higher resolution of the larger film will make a material difference in the end result.  It is very similar to the frame you would get with a Hasselblad X-pan or one of the Linhof Technorama, both panoramic films cameras.

I fully acknowledge that it would be possible to take this shot with a little more sky with a longer focal length.  But I don't have anything longer than the 135mm.

If it doesn't take me too long I will try to post up the MF version of this shot that executes on my vision for your consideration.  I'm perfectly happy to get any and all criticism of it and be convinced that it doesn't work.  Sometimes we need to separate ourselves from the emotional attachment to our photos and constructive feedback from others really helps me do this.

Thanks again for your time,

Adam

Adam,

I've scene variants of this shot from street level (DUMBO - Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass), centering the Empire State Building in the lower trestle opening under the bridge.  I really like this perspective and as you said, adding interesting cloud formations will just enhance the result. Great capture.

I plan to make a DUMBO trip once the weather gets a bit nicer.

Yes, I love that spot in DUMBO.  I have staked out some photos from there over the past year.  Here are two examples (with Ektar and Ilford Delta 3200, respectively)....  Would love to go shooting with you around these spots one day.  Our fellow forum member Steve Blitz is sually game for this type of stuff, too. :)

That's the spot and the shot...nice!  I will definitely contact you the next time I come over the river with time to shoot.   Work has been insanely busy, so I've just taken what I can get to and from my office these days.
