Lens Alternatives fantasy

Have any of you with the time to stay current on all the rumor sites seen any hints about Zeiss or Sigma producing lenses that would operate on the SL, with either manual focus and automatic aperture stop-down, or even full AF?  Zeiss has long made lenses for the M-mount, and both make lenses for the Sony FE mount with various levels of function, so why wouldn't this be a good business case for them (and an opportunity for us)?

Compared to the number of M cameras the L bayonet cameras are just a drop on a hot stone, right now (how many can there be until the end of the year ? 2-3 thousand ? Maybe 5000 ?)

And I don't know how happy they are with the number of lenses they sell for M ?

So still too early for an interesting business case.

There are other companies like Meyer-Optik Görlitz that might produce lenses for the SL.

Currently only for the M or M42, for example a new version of the once-famous Trioplan. And other rebirths of classical lenses.

They work with sponsoring. So if there are enough people interested and willing to make a small investment, they might also build lenses for the SL.

Their lenses are typically for view-finder focusing (no mechanical coupling), so they are ideal for the SL.

At the present, I have 16 lenses dedicated to use with the SL, all Leica—all but one Leica R (the SL 24-90 is the exception).

I haven't been looking for any proposed new lenses because I just don't really need any more lenses.  B)

(I don't know for sure but) I suspect that the Leica T-mount is locked up with a patent that Leica would need to license to prospective third party lens makers to permit them to produce compatible lenses and Leica's never been forthcoming in the past since this was the case for many years with the M-mount before the patent expired.  Third party lens makers could of course make M-mount lenses for use with the T to M adaptor but of course they'd have to forego AF.  Beyond that, I doubt that the business case for design and production of such lenses would be viable for such a small customer target and amortisation of design costs would likely drive the retail price beyond what customers would be willing to pay.  Of course the price would be set by what the market would stand so I could be wrong.

Many existing SLR lenses can operate on SL, it helps if they have aperture ring and manual focus.

Talking of Zeiss apart from ZM''s SLR lenses with Nikon bayonet are easily adaptable via numerous readily available adapters.  One without equivalent in Leica R range springs to mind, APO Sonnar 2/135mm.

Also worth considering is Zeiss Distagon 2.8/15mm easily available new unlike rare as hens teeth Leica R 15mm f2.8 which by the way is not manufactured by Leica but either Schneider or Zeiss.

The APO Sonnar 135/2 sounds interesting although it is a rather unwieldy lens.

The Super-Elmarit-R 15mm f/2.8 is indeed fairly rare and still quite expensive. It was manufactured by Schneider. The Super-Elmar-R 15mm f/3.5 is the Zeiss Distagon 15/3.5 T* lens in R mount with Leica specific tuning to coatings and filters; it's available for substantially less. Both are superb performers, as is the current Distagon 15, with very little to tell between them in practice. I have the latter Leica R lens.

I was reading on Leica rumors, Meyer-Optik Gorlitz is coming out with a Trioplan f2.9/50 for the Leica SL and T.

I looked at the website and it is very interesting. They have more lenses even a Nocturnus-f0,95/50mm.

Is there a member with info about this Brand?

Here the link: http://leicarumors.com/2016/05/03/meyer-optik-gorlitz-trioplan-f2-950-lens-will-be-available-in-leica-l-mount.aspx/

and a second link: http://pentaxrumors.com/2016/05/03/meyer-optik-gorlitz-trioplan-f2-950-lens-will-be-available-in-pentax-k-mount/

I am just a bit surprised that they did not select the Trioplan 2.8/100 which seems much more interesting to me.

It comes in June, so maybe they change their mind until then.

I add the picture because it looks so amazing. Admin, feel free to remove it, if this is a problem.

Will this be an AF lens?

It doesn't look like it is. The information available also does not indicate whether it has the electronic couplings that would allow lens information to be embedded into EXIF.

Looks nice. Small, slim, and light. Might be interesting to have a couple of small light lenses like this; a 50 and a 90 would be a good pair.

Godfrey,

there will be a 2.8/100, no 90, in June, but it is not clear if they will support the SL as well.

But be aware that this is a famous lens, but famous for its "bubble bokeh". So it is not really the typical lens you are used.

And yes, they are just for manual use, no mechanic coupling or electronic contacts.

"Need" is an improper criteria.   "Want" is more appropriate.
