Quail in Winter

Took this image of a small covey of California quail that visit my yard every morning. Over the years these quail have expanded their range from California north to Idaho and beyond. Always amusing to watch as they prefer to walk and run over taking flight.

Bill, nice shot! Our Australian quail are also reluctant flyers and seem to prefer to walk to their destination, they habitually follow each other in single file, the birds in your photo seem to be doing the same thing.

I've never been able to discern whether they have a permanent leader-bird or take it in turns as it's impossible to tell them apart!
