wattsy Posted January 14, 2016 Share #21 Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) It's not surprising that Leica are standardising on the threaded hoods. If the photos here are real, the new hood for the 35 Summicron looks ludicrously large whereas the 28 one looks like a welcome improvement. Advertisement Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Hi wattsy, Take a look here Rumor - Three new Leica M lenses tomorrow?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted January 14, 2016 Share #22 Posted January 14, 2016 Incidentally, the introduction of new versions of these lenses (if true) should be a good buying opportunity as many of these are dumped on the second hand market by 'upgraders'. Used prices for the 28 Summicron are already pretty low so I wouldn't be surprised to see it go well under £1500.
indergaard Posted January 14, 2016 Share #23 Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) I wonder how much the costs of the lenses will go up with this "new release"...That's probably gonna be the biggest change. Leicaiste Posted January 14, 2016 Share #24 Posted January 14, 2016 I wonder how much the costs of the lenses will go up with this "new release"... That's probably gonna be the biggest change. It doesn't seem so. http://www.summilux.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=75365&start=
indergaard Posted January 14, 2016 Share #25 Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) It doesn't seem so. http://www.summilux.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=75365&start=15 I don't know french. But here is the post on Leicarumors: http://leicarumors.com/2016/01/14/leica-introduces-three-new-m-lenses-with-improved-performance-summicron-m-35mm-summicron-m-28mm-and-elmarit-m-28mm.aspx/ It says the lenses has a new optical design. Although here it says that the lenses retain the same qualities as the previous versions: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/news/unveiled-leica-gives-three-wide-angle-m-lenses-makeover?BI=4906 At most I expect a new coating or something similar... No complete re-designs. Edited January 14, 2016 by indergaard
pgk Posted January 14, 2016 Share #26 Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) According to Leica's site (http://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-M/M-Lenses) its unclear as to whether these lenses are completely newly designed although the 35/2 rather sounds as if it is because the info about this lens states " The newly designed and constructed lens" which does not sound as if it referring to the existing (1997) lens. Steve Ash Posted January 14, 2016 Share #27 Posted January 14, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) For the 35 the MTF curves, which can be downloaded, look unchanged to me. For the 28 they are slightly changed. Steve

Steve Ash Posted January 14, 2016 Share #29 Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) The LFI websites provides the answers. For the summicron 35 there are 11 aperture blades now. For the other two lenses optics are slightly improved. Revision: Well, Andreas provides now all the details on the forum. colint544 Posted January 14, 2016 Share #30 Posted January 14, 2016 The 11-bladed iris on the 35mm Summicron looks sweet, as do all of the updates. It does look, though, like they'll no longer be making the silver version out of that nice weighty brass.

Leicaiste Posted January 14, 2016 Share #33 Posted January 14, 2016 Did they cut the back the lens on the pictures ? It seems that the optical group of the 35/2 doesn't stick out of the mount anymore. Welcome, dear visitor! pgk Posted January 14, 2016 Share #37 Posted January 14, 2016 Its interesting that the 28/2.8 features much improved field curvature. I wonder if this is as a result of flat field being recognised as the pre-requisite of 'digital' optimised lenses?
colint544 Posted January 14, 2016 Share #38 Posted January 14, 2016 I don't think the silver 35mm Summicron ASPH is really chrome. It seems to be silver anodised, and my guess is that it's not made of brass like the previous version. Most likely aluminium, the same as the black version. comte de Mazan Posted January 14, 2016 Share #39 Posted January 14, 2016 I think that they cut the picture of the 35mm lens, because the length of the old one (34,5mm) is more or less the same than the new one (35,7mm)…
Rick Posted January 14, 2016 Author Share #40 Posted January 14, 2016 I am waiting for the threads that praise the rendering/contrast/bokeh of the "classic" 35 asph over the "harsh" new one.. It always happens that way. Disclosure - it is, despite its age, my favourite 35 mm lens, which I prefer over the newest Summilux. Never had any issues with focus shift either. I totally agree, the newer lens designs from Leica have a harsher more clinical look. I much prefer the classic 35 asph to the new yet to be released 35.
