Cracked the screen

I was hanging my M8.2 on my shoulder, I sat on some stairs and it slightly hit the step behind me, I heard an awful sound.

It's only the outer glass and it's not affecting in anyway the viewing on the screen. (please check the enclosed pics)

I contacted Leica, they said that they could no longer  fix the screen and they proposed a 20% on the purchase of a new M camera.

I guess it's only a outer protection, do you know if I can replace myself the glass and what kind of glass should I look for?

Hi, I would put a Giotto Protective Screen over the crack..use it, forget the crack..

I'm surprised Leica said they can't replace the screen - maybe they didn't realise what you meant as the actual LCD can no longer be replaced.

 

I think the screen (that is the cover) is held to the body with adhesive which you can heat with a hairdryer to remove, so if you could find a replacement cover it should be pretty simple to DIY. 

 

Or do as suggested above.

I have no suggestions better than those offered.  Just my condolences.

 

The 8.2 has the sapphire screen...perhaps just more brittle than the usual M8 screen which I think is too soft, and prone to micro-scratches..

I'd urge all M8 users to fit a sacrificial screen cover.

The actual LCD screen is of course long gone due to Leica's ineptitude in maintaining an adequate supply of spare parts and using up that supply to fix cameras in warranty leaving none for the future.

 

The plastic screen cover used to come as a complete assembly with the rear of the clam shell due I think to the curing process for the glue used to secure the screen cover to the casting. It is completely separate from the part which we know is no longer available.

 

I really do wonder whether Leica have fully understood your problem. Did you send the picture of the damage to them? You should avoid using words like LCD because that just results in a "nicht moeglich" knee jerk reaction.

Thank you Mark, I did not send the picture, but explained that only the external glass is broken, maybe I shall try again.

So this is the Leica part which needs to be replaced, the rear part of the clamshell which comes with the plastic screen cover already in place. Of course, the buttons, dial, LCD module and DSP board need to be transferred across but this is the work of a few minutes. You'll also need replacement leather(-ette) covering since it has to be peeled back to reveal the 6 screws which have to be removed to separate the two halves.

 

Send the picture to Leica Service telling them that on, "good authority" (he said, modestly), this is the part you need. The person to be in touch with is the ever helpful Andrea Frankl. I hope she still works for Leica, it would be a pity if she doesn't.

One further thought - yours in an M8.2 which IIRC has the sapphire glass cover. The part I showed is from an M8 which has a polycarbonate cover. Of course, if Leica can no longer supply the sapphire glass cover version, they may be able to supply the plastic version but whether they would or not, I do not know.

Mark, thank you for taking the time for the detailed explanation, I decided to keep the M8.2 (as is) for now, knowing that it is only external cover and save the expenses on shipment and repair.

The LCD saga is a bit more than ineptitude, as you know, Mark. Anyway, the OP could request to be considered for the exchange offer.

And yes, I happened to exchange New Year's wishes with Andrea yesterday.

Jaap, you are of course right, there was more to it than that, not least the LCD manufacturer shipping defective product before discontinuing it. The bottom line though is that Leica could not supply replacement working LCDs. Good to hear Andrea is still there.

 

Gary, the issue is that the screen is bonded to the casting using a clear adhesive which, I believe, is UV cured or similar and not suitable for field installation so the casting and screen cover come as a single replaceable part. When one of my M8s was upgraded - to what we used to call M8U (seems a long time ago doesn't it?) - a cosmetically scuffed rear casting came back replaced as part of the upgrade to the sapphire screen.

If Leica have said they can't repair the cover screen we can only assume that they're out of stock of those body/screen units. 

 

I guess it would be possible/should be possible to pull that broken cover screen off and have a new piece of suitable material cut to size and glued in, if you really wanted to. 

 

I'm sure I saw a thread here where somebody's cover screen had fallen off by itself and they glued it back on.

Mark, appreciate the thoughts. And without seeing the actual item it's difficult to assess, but in the same thought as James. I'd be "fixing" it myself if the part was completely understand available.

After I attached (bought from B&H) a GIOTTO SCHOTT GLASS, made for M8 and M9 cameras.

Great job. I've never fully understood why Leica can't repair an M8 LCD screen, when the M9 and M Monochrom mk1 appear to have exactly the same screen. Presumably they can still replace the screens on the M9 and MM mk1.

The problem is that it's not the same LCD screen. Almost but not quite, and replacements can no longer be sourced (economically).

good job. that is exactly what i was about to suppose as a solution for your problem.

 

when i took my M8 to tunisia and used it in constant warm conditions, the screen from my M8 just fell off and i had to reglue it. it is (in the case of the M8) just a flat piece of Plexiglas and there is no big deal about replacing it. any 8-year-old who has ever applied a sreenprotection to his Nintendo can do that within 10 Minutes (although it wouldn't look as great as the result you achieved.)

that might be true. but the M-D doesn't even have an LCD-screen and is still considered to be a complete camera. i gues it would not be a big deal to set the M8 to "dng only" and ISO 160 and then just use it till the end of (its) days.
