Tim Hogendoorn Posted January 10, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Good day, dear Leicaphiles. Since starting in photography about 5 years ago, I quickly learned about the leica cameras and owned quite a few since. Then finally, 3 months ago I could buy my first digital body; the M9, unfortunately not without any hassle... Although it is obviously a second hand camera, I got it with one year warranty from the store I got it at. After a month of using the camera with my 35mm summicron v3, I coupled a 90mm summarit on it and found the focussing screen did not move anymore. I returned to the store and they took the camera back and sent it for repairs to Camtech (the official camera repair point for Leica in The Netherlands), and after 4 weeks the camera returned with the only repair being done was "realigned focussing". Now, 3 weeks into using the camera again (with my old 35mm summicron v3) the problem has returned... but only after coupling a 50mm summicron apo on the camera (strange right?)! This little part shown on the pictures, moves when you focus a lens, as all of you probably know. Focussing was smooth untill I coupled this 50mm summicron apo on it in a store, and suddenly the problem returned! The "focussing arm" gets stuck on infinity and feels like it is grinding metal on metal when cautiously moving with a finger. I own two other M film camera's (M3, M6) and coupling these lenses on the film bodies causes no problems, and i am always very careful with my gems :-) Long story short (sorry ), has anybody ever have this happening to your Leica camera? Would you guys prefer the camera to be sent for repairs again for a month, or ask for the money back? And more importantly; what is the official term/name for this camera part in rangefinder camera's?! Thank you for reading! Welcome, dear visitor! nobbylon Posted January 11, 2016 Share #2 Posted January 11, 2016 Tim, check that the arm is not bent upward too high and is touching something when moved. It may be that mounting a particular lens with the roller on the very edge of the lens focus rim has bent the roller arm upwards. I had this problem on an m2 a while back and was solved by bending the arm back so that the roller is in the correct position.
jaapv Posted January 11, 2016 Share #3 Posted January 11, 2016 At any rate, it is something the store should handle under guaranty. I would not go bending things myself. Ask the store to send it to Wetzlar. I always bypass Camtech, they are more of a general repair shop than a Leica specialist.
Tim Hogendoorn Posted January 12, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted January 12, 2016 (edited) thanks for replies guys, the camera was sent away for repairs again today. After a call with Leica today, I've learned that it's a pretty common problem. The problem lies in a mechanical part of the camera (encircled) that moves the focussing arm, beneath the top cover, wich would need to be repolished. I got the picture from another post on this forum, didn't take it apart myself thanks. Welcome, dear visitor!
