patientlywaiting Posted January 8, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 8, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apologies if this question has been asked before - it's about the Nik Collection, and the forum search tool won't accept just the three letters of 'Nik' and stalls when I enter both words. I'm curious to know whether the collection is widely in use amongst Nikon users. I downloaded a trial version some time ago and, while I liked the monochrome conversions, I just didn't get the chance for a concentrated enough trial. Some of the shots on the Q forum (that's what I'm using, a Q) seem to me beautifully rendered in B&W, but there's often no info available on the processing that's been done. So, if anyone is or isn't using the Nik collection for particular reasons, I'd be grateful to hear of your experience. Any recommendations or dissuading is welcome! Thanks. machmaphoto Posted January 8, 2016 Share #2 Posted January 8, 2016 I dont think the NIK Software is something special for Nikon Users as you think. I use it with Phoshop Elements (especially SilverEfexPro for BWConversions) and it is a really great software.
patientlywaiting Posted January 8, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted January 8, 2016 Many thanks, Machmaphoto. Yes, my memory is that SilverEfexPro was the most attractive component of the collection. I don't know what's going on with that let me type 'Nikon'; I certainly meant Leica. Apologies. Freudian, do you think?
patientlywaiting Posted January 8, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted January 8, 2016 Oh dear - LEICA, I meant, not Nikon. What on earth ...?
mike_j Posted January 8, 2016 Share #5 Posted January 8, 2016 I have the NIK collection but only use SilverEfexPro from it although I tried the other apps. It is very good but can easily give overcooked results and I sometimes find that I prefer the simple Lightroom conversion for my M8 files. wda Posted January 8, 2016 Share #6 Posted January 8, 2016 I have the Nik collection which is a fine set of tools for a modest outlay. It is extremely powerful and can achieve results which would take considerable mastery of Photoshop skills. But, don't underestimate the learning curve. It is not naturally intuitive, although some of the included presets give you a good start. I suggest you concentrate on learning about Control Points (CP) which would require masking skills in photoshop. CPs are probably the collection's unique selling point. 250swb Posted January 9, 2016 Share #7 Posted January 9, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is the best post processing software you can buy, and it's cheap for what you get. I don't know if the name 'Nik' is directly associated with Nikon, but the company did originally pioneer the control point technology for Nikon's Capture NX. Either way, things have moved on and Google have done us all a favour. Steve
sanyasi Posted January 11, 2016 Share #8 Posted January 11, 2016 I have used the collection since it was first issued. Silver Efex is where I spend most of my time, but I also like Color Efex--in particular the Tonal Contrast filter. I also use the resharpening software. I am not a fan of control points in Silver Efex. I tend to do the conversion in Silver Efex, and then refine the results in Photoshop using the dodge and burn brushes. otto.f Posted January 11, 2016 Share #9 Posted January 11, 2016 I use the NIK collection with pleasure but not always, mostly SilverEfexPro2 and in cases I want some special effect. It used to function as a plug-in in CS6, but since I stepped ocer to the Creative Cloud version of Ps I am not anymore able to install it as its plug-in which is a pity. It can only be installed in LR6 so I use it that way

You may have to re-install it. Make sure you have the latest version of the Nik Collection so the installer will recognize Photoshop CC. otto.f Posted January 11, 2016 Share #11 Posted January 11, 2016 Thank you!! I did reinstall even after contacting Leica to freshen up my member's area. Maybe I should have discarded it first and that it did not overwrite. I'll ask Leica if he put on the most recent version
Luke_Miller Posted January 11, 2016 Share #12 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) working from memory here, but I believe the installer has the option (click on the "+") to allow the user to navigate to the proper folder and select Photoshop CC 2015 if the installer did not find it automatically. antoine909 Posted January 15, 2016 Share #13 Posted January 15, 2016 I have all the NIK collection and they are terrific. Silver FX my most used. The noise reduction, Dfine 2, is the next most used. Well recommended. I use it as a plug-in with Lightroom CC. It is not camera specific, just apply the plug-in to any photo you want to manipulate. NIK also developed Snapseed for manipulating photos on an iPad. This too is a very good iPad app.
otto.f Posted January 17, 2016 Share #14 Posted January 17, 2016 (edited) working from memory here, but I believe the installer has the option (click on the "+") to allow the user to navigate to the proper folder and select Photoshop CC 2015 if the installer did not find it automatically. It's running smoothly now. Working with the + procedure was to no avail in my case, Ps CC wasn't recognized or made active in the install procedure, or so it seemed. I became help from Nicolas Kaufmann at Leica CS and the trick was that a Google map in the NIK Collection map had to be copied into the Photoshop CC Plugins map. That was the solution. Re-install was unnecessary. Thanks for letting me know that it should be possible. Edited January 17, 2016 by otto.f
