Photographs with 21mm ASPH, you use it?

This is not to evaluate this lens, or compare it with other extreme angle, just about whether or not used much.

I have had several 28mm ASPH, also tested the 24mm ASPH, but being so close to 28mm have not seen it interesting, I've decididopor the 21mm ASPH, I love the result for my kind of photography.

 

I'm beginning to know.

A 21mm can be effective but I honestly don't see enough of an advantage over the 28mm in the street to make it a go-to lens for normal use.  The 28mm is plenty wide and allows for plenty of intimacy.  In order to make a photo with the 21mm look very close up you really need to be extremely close to the subject, pushing the limits of the minimum distance on the camera and lens (so instead of shooting someone from 4 or 5 feet away you need to be 3 or 4 feet away).  This affects the DOF of the photography more so than if taken with a 28mm.   also, it makes it harder to get properly exposed shots with flash given the extra closeness. (No need to make it harder than it needs to be...:) )

 

Having said this, for those sweeping scenes in which there is a lot going on, the 21mm can be effective at capturing much more than the eyes can see at once, which enhances the surrealism of the photo.  (I use my Hasselblad SWC (which in 35mm terms is just less than 20mm in FL) for this type of photography sometimes)

Hello my friend.

I do not hassel use, it is too heavy and bulky for the street these days where everyone goes very fast.

The 21mm is very good for me because I do indoor photography in abandoned houses, 28 is short in these cases.

With the 21mm I have seen that I can get inside the action in the demonstrations and riots, which is why the change, for me it is necessary, I can also take pictures how are you more closely, and I can always cut them to size of a 28mm.

 

Regarding D.O.F. I'm sure the same distance shooting you get more DOF with 21mm certainly, and also the effect is more dramatic with 21mm knowing shoot with, I have not yet, I'm learning.

The situation is that you can always cut and here I think there is much benefit ..............


This is my idea and so far so good.

Hi all

 

My first 21mm Lens was the pré-ASPH Elmarit. It was a good lens but not a excellent performer. Last year I changed it by the new Super-Elmar which is realy an excellent lens and I love it. If shooting a riot with a superwide, remember what it says on a car's rear-view mirror: Objects are closer than they appear.

M-P240  21mm SEM @ f3.4

 

I was actually going for my 35mm lux FLE and grabbed the 21mm SEM by mistake.  Once I put the lens on, I realized I made a mistake, but didn't feel like swapping lenses again in the the snow...so I just went with it. 

 

21mm is usable for sure, you just need to make sure your composition captures the story you want to tell.

I have a copy of the 21/3.4 Super Elmar ASPH and find that for photographing people the best distance is arm's length, roughly 2 to 2 1/2 feet from the main subject.  The 28mm and 35mm lenses work well at about twice that distance.

 

A lot of people think of the 21mm and 28mm as being very close in terms of field of view; I have found that in practice, the 21mm gives me a significant chunk of real estate compared to the 35mm or 28mm; roughly 25% more at the left and right edges of the frame with a 35 and a bit less at the top & bottom edges.  Compared to a 28mm, the difference is more like 20-22%, which is still a significant gain.

 

I always strive to shoot full frame and avoid cropping, especially with wide angle lenses.  Cropping defeats the purpose of wide angle lenses; it results in less pixels to work with and less image quality when making large prints.
