The 280 Telyt lens was launched (1961,  model 11902) with a tripod foot and heavy rotating mount  similar to the larger 400 telyt. In short order, Leitz removed the foot and used a smaller tripod mount and lightweight parallel focusing mount (model 11912).  From observations, it seems the serial numbers of these early 280 telyts range from 1850001 to 1850375, for a very low production of this variant. If anyone has added information or a serial later than 1850375 please comment. 1850386 is a confirmed second version.

The photo only shows the early version.

Regards.

If 1850386, then the no. of production should be less than 385!?

The 8th edition of the Leica Pocket Book states that the starting number for the production of version 1 of this lens was 1 850 001, hence 385 is the maximum number produced. Wish I had bought one I saw in Brighton many years ago, but I already had a version 2. However, I have since bought the lens head (version 3) for use with the Focorapid.

It's images like this that tell me, although I might be prone to a duplicate focal length or two, I'll never really understand the mind of the collector.

Me neither. I understand collecting paintings: you keep them on the wall and look at them. But anything else is out of my understanding.

Years ago I was collecting guitars, but in the end I was always playing my favourite one. So I sold them all and kept that one.

Even though this a special and wonderful stuff of the highest engineering and a piece of history, I'd have my problems using it all. I should spend my days (and nights) going around taking pictures, lol

Well, impressive indeed! I had two first versions, nº 1850222 and 1850338. My first second version (I had three) was 1850616, and my first version 3 (for Visoflex II or III) was numbered 2342197.

Interesting! your first version carries the no. 1850338 whereas the second version listed has a lower serial no. 1950323 :D

Probably there are around 330 first version made!?

As usual when a thread evokes one of the pieces I had in my Fontenelle Collection, I rush to my files. And as usual, I do not resist the temptation to publish some of the images I found : on the two colour first, the first version nº 1850338, on the third one, the three successive versions compared
