to Stuart, aka stuny,

In part as a token of appreciation for the dedicated, thoughtful and sensitive role you fulfill as moderator, and in part for your enjoyment during quiet moments over the upcoming holiday season, I am posting these two images of a '60 Maserati Tipo 61 'Birdcage' sports/racer, taken at the '15 edition of the Rolex Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca. Personally, I share the view of many who enthusiastically have declared the Birdcage to be one of the most beautiful designs of all times - not only is the front view classic, functional and a perfect example of form following function, but the rear view of this jewel is as voluptuous, attractive and aerodynamically efficient as any.

16 copies of Giulio Alfieri's masterpiece were constructed, but alas, never managed to achieve their primary objective, i.e. to win the 24 hours of LaMans overall, but did win the 1000 kilometers of Nürburgring race consecutively in '59 & '60 with Stirling Moss / Dan Gurney driving. Today, Birdcages are among the most sought after collector cars from the 'golden age' of sports car racing.

Thanks again, Stuart

John -

Thank you, and I'm in complete agreement regarding the Birdcage's beauty -- I've always loved them: menacing, purposeful, almost delicate.  And your photos of it, as usual, are terrific.

Have you seen the photos/drawings of Maser's new Alfieri, coming in 2018?  https://www.google.com/search?q=maserati+alfieri&biw=1516&bih=794&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwjHsaiXp7vJAhVDHh4KHebyB5QQ7AkILA&dpr=1
