Hope this is found and returned to my favourite 'professional amateur' photographer! Just a small point - was he given more than one of these? I ask because there is a video on YouTube showing him on commission for the Macallen (malt whisky) using a black autographed body with a crank rewind and what looks like a different serial number.

Or you never knows who's going to buy it. If there are dishonest collectors that buy at the black market billion Euros paintings, there might be some dishonest ones buying the camera for keeping it on the shelf or also taking photographs. Otherwise it would be impossible to find who took a certain pic in a certain place of the world. Even worse if they disassemble it to sell it as parts.

How do such people even look in the mirror in the morning and stand themselves?

Pretty stupid thing to nick (and I hope Westlicht get the camera and lens back undamaged) but lets not get too carried away about the significance of this theft for mankind.

Edit: It seems that I have underestimated the desirability of this camera. Whilst I don't personally find it very interesting nor do I think it is an important camera (it being essentially a modern stock MP with a bit of engraving) it appears that it is quite valuable (selling, with an old press card, for €31,200 at the 100 years auction in 2014). Interesting to note that the black paint M3 owned by HCB and given to Inge Morath (lot 75) didn't fetch a great deal more (€52,800) yet strikes me as far more desirable and historically interesting.
