To use the included Lightroom download from Leica?

Recommended Posts

Before my recent purchase of a Q I have had a stand alone version of Lightroom (v 6.1).  Is there any advantage in downloading the free version from Adobe that Leica provides?  Thanks

If you already have Lightroom 6.1, there is no difference whatever between that and the download provided by Leica. Don't download it and save your TAN code ...

After I upgraded to the M-P via Leica's upgrade program for the sensor corrosion issue, I had a left-over Leica M9 box with all the paperwork and the TAN code. An unused TAN code netted me $130 for the box from another M9 owner who'd bought his M9 used without a box. This way he had the latest LR and a nice original Leica box for $40 over what buying LR would have cost.

Does this mean these 'TAN' codes are good indefinitely until used?  (I don't have LR, but am thinking of waiting, perhaps, for a newer version of LR(7.x) given some of the complaints of LR6 ...)

Thanks!

The TAN codes seem to be good indefinitely. Leica updates the version of LR offered periodically if not frequently, I presume when the update is needed for the latest cameras they offer. It's not exactly on every cycle of Lightroom.

LR v6.1.1 seems mostly fine (yes, it has a few regressions from the last of the Lr 5 set that I've written up bug reports against). It is the horrendous Lr 6.2.x release that's a mess — 6.2 was lots of crashing, the new (mostly horrible) import tools, etc. They cleaned up the crashing in LR 6.2.1 and are supposedly going to reinstate the former Import mechanism in Lr 6.3. Lr 7 could be a ways off, I don't know. I'm sticking with Lr 6.1.1 until they pull out the hideous import garbage. ;-)

This raises an interesting point. Abobe has said that LR6 is the last standalone version; future upgrades will be subscription only. I have a suspicion that the TAN that Leica provides is an LR CC2015 (as opposed to perpetual license LR6 requiring a serial number) version with the phone home for subscription verification tuned off. When I tried to download the TAN, it installed the CC app manager and wanted to "update" (i.e. overwrite) my existing LR6 perpetual license installation, so I aborted. My question to anyone who has installed their TAN: do you have the Dehaze slider available in the Effects panel of the develop module? The Dehaze feature is available only in LR CC2015, not in the standalone version. If that's the case, those TANs are worth their weight in gold.

This thread is interesting and developing nicely. I purchased a Q in August and downloaded what must be standalone LR6 for Mac with the TAN supplied.  However, I haven't installed it, and instead have stuck with v4. It's just laziness to be honest, and v4 is what I'm familiar with.

my question would be.   Do I have the right to another download .  Can I delay that, and might I get the slightly crippled CC?

Subject to some clarification regarding "dadohead's" point, I'd like to make an optimised decision.

thanks.

It's the standalone that is "crippled." LR6 remains frozen wrt new features, but CC2015, although released at the same time, gets new ones, like the Dehaze slider, and more recently the ability to brush the Dehaze effect, neither of which is present in stand-alone LR6.1.1 or 6.2.1. Which is why I asked. If the Dehaze effect is present in the TAN installation, then the TAN versions are essentially unlocked CC2015 versions; you get the subscription advantages without the fees. Win-win. Then the next question would be what happens in 2016 or whenever Adobe next upgrades? Would the TAN installation continue to work subscription-free in perpetuity? If so, that would be extremely valuable for a user.

Leica didn't want to write a raw converter themselves (which, from what I've seen so far was smart), so they licensed LR before there was a subscription model. Adobe has stated unequivocally that there will be no perpetual license LR7; CC only. If that's the case, what does Leica bundle with their cameras? I'm wondering if it's fee-free CC. That would be awesome.

Speaking of Lightroom... both 6.1.whatever and 6.2.1 seem to have EXIF issues when exporting jpegs from Leica Q DNG files.  Anyone else see this?  You might not know the issue exists unless you use something like exiftool to peruse the EXIF data.  The exact issue appears to be corruption of a few fields in the metadata.

Hi Ramarren  - a question for you  - I too have a replacement for my corrosion issue M9 and have therefore the M9 box to sell with unused TAN code. As part of the upgrade you pass ownership to Leica of the camera to be replaced - does not the TAN code go with the serial number? I looked at my page on the Leica members page and my M9 is still registered there with the unused TAN code but how does a buyer of the box get the download if they cannot register the camera? Or am I being naive here and they can register anyway - if you get my drift!

Where can one purchase a TAN code? I used mine for my Mac mini ,  I need one to use with my wife's HP.

Well I have one for sale in the classifieds but along with a bundle of M9 accessories. However i am sure there will be others out there. I think we multi-camera Leica body users tend to hold onto them 'just in case' a further upgrade to LR is available. But with the Adobe move to cloud services LR6 maybe the last standalone version and as someone else has said on the forum what do Leica give away then? A years free subscription perhaps?

That shouldn't be necessary. Each download entitles you to run LR on two computers (in your family possession). I have my main on a desktop and second copy on a laptop.

Just to follow up on this: I have a perpetual license for LR 6. Out of complete bored curiosity, I downloaded the TAN version that came with my Q and installed it. This was a terrible mistake as it completely borked my perpetual install, and not even two hours with the execrable Adobe support could fix it. I knew we were done when it was suggested that I create a new user account on my machine. (For the record, I have a guest account for the very purpose of exploring corrupted user accounts and that didn't fix it; the suggestion, though, showed me that Adobe support was just fishing at that point and wasting my time. Indeed, they also deactivated my CS6 installs.)

As near as I can tell, the TAN is essentially a trial version with the 30 day restriction removed. On one of my many installs/uninstalls, I was presented with this dialog:

Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here…

Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!

That's about 90 years, so don't count on passing your TAN code to your great grandchildren. As a trial version, it requires you to log in with an Adobe ID, and attempting to log out threatens to deactivate the software. You can run the TAN version on any two machines simultaneously. But it seems that with the TAN you have to log in to boot the software and stay logged in to use it. Meaning if you don't have an internet connection, you are out of luck. Also meaning the software is almost certainly phoning home to the Adobe mothership with details about how you are using the software.

So, it's not really a LR6 perpetual license, since with a perpetual you don't have to log in to use it. And it's not a CC2015 license, either. It's some foul creature that exists in between, and I wish I had never seen it.
