Not sure if this is the veiling flare that folks talk about but this evening, whilst enjoying a lovely Peak District sunset, a number of images have what seems to be inverted images of the sun "reflected" lower in the picture (near to the sheep).

Any ideas?

It is one sharp lens though, as what I thought were dust spots, turned out to be migrating birds! (see cropped image)

No, the veiling glare is a general loss of contrast across a wider area. The blob of 'flare' in your photo looks more like a reflection of the sun off of the sensor (and then back off the lens) or something like that.

I have a similar example, although a different lens (35 Summicron), different medium (film) and at a different time of the day (dawn). Must be something to do with sheep. :D

This is classic veiling flare...like shooting through a white veil...
