I am sure this question was addressed before, but I couldn't find the answers.   I thought of adding one or the other lens to my recently acquired S2 (have only a 70mm). I read some interesting reviews about Mamiya 645 AF-System Lenses. Of course, you can't replace a Leica lens, I get that. However, price and weight are important considerations too.

Being that the Leica S2 is an AF cam, it would be counter-intuitive to start having to shoot manual. I am doing that already on my T cam with some M lenses. I'd like to retain a reliable communication between lens and the S2 camera body. Therefore my question:

==> Thinking of Mamiya lenses, and when coupled with the Leica M645 S-Adapter

for Mamiya 645-System Lenses, do I retain the "all-auto" functions on the S ?

Alternatively, which other lens (other than Leica) would let me retain the sought after reliable communication between lens and camera body ("all-auto" functions remain fully functional) ?

Thanks for your (hopefully encouraging) replies.

The only lenses that remain auto aperture and auto focus on the S are with the S - Contax 645 adapter and S - Hasselblad H adapter.

So the only lenses that would remain all AUTO fucntions on the S are:

Leica S lenses (Obvious... also possible with Central/Leaf shutter to 1/1000th)

Contax 645 lenses (No Central/Leaf shutter)

Hasselblad H (with Central/Leaf shutter to 1/750th)

The other lens adapters that Leica offers have no mechanical or electronic functionality apart from 'mounting the xxx mount to Leica S'

I hope this helps you! :)

That's why they obviously call you the "Leica Guru".

You betcha that this info was VERY helpful - thanks.

Just to clarify:

When you say

-   "Contax 645 lenses (No Central/Leaf shutter)",

-   "Hasselblad H (with Central/Leaf shutter to 1/750th)"

which ones -specifically- are you talking about?

They do come with all sorts of acronyms that are just too much to handle for a mere mortal like myself.

Thanks for the "extra" help in advance.

He means that the Contax 645 lenses can be used via the C adapter and they retain automatic aperture and autofocus, but they have never come with leaf shutters (therefore do not allow synchronisation of strobes at shutter speeds higher than 1/125s on the Leica S). On the other hand, the Hasselblad H lenses, which can be used on the S via the H adapter (and retain automatic aperture and autofocus) all come with leaf shutters (Hasselblad H bodies, unlike the Leica S, do not have a focal plane shutter). These Hassy leaf shutters go up to 1/750s and allow flash synchronisation up to their highest speed - both on the native Hassy bodies and on Leica S bodies, via the H adapter, when the camera shutter is set to the CS setting. One aspect that I really like is also that there are dedicated profiles for the H lenses on Leica S in Lightroom, and the Leica cameras write correct metadata in the files...). Basically, the Hasselblad H lenses behave completely "natively" on the S, through the adapter.

Dear "abireo", thank you for weighing into this thread.

Very good additional info. I now understand that ALL Hasselblad lenses -with the proper adapter- work natively on the S without restrictions and limitations. Good to know.

However, again, given the numerous acronyms, surnames etc. with lens specifications in the Mamiya lens line, my question remains, which lenses -precisely- will work just as the Hasselblad lenses without restrictions and limitations ?

Here is a list of Mamiya 645AF lenses so you understand my predicament and confusion, and my need for further clarification:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mamiya_products#Mamiya_645AF_lenses

Please let me know which ones work just as if they were S lenses, without restrictions and limitations.

None of the Mamiya 645 lenses will work just as if they were S lenses. The M adapter does not have electronic coupling (unlike the H and C adapters). The Mamiya lenses will all have to be stopped down manually and focused manually. Which means that those Mamiya lenses that have no aperture ring will only work fully open (not very useful...). If you follow previous discussions here, the only Mamiya lenses that people have considered worth using on the S, were the APO 300 2.8, APO 200 2.8 (lower cost than alternatives and acceptable image quality) and the 80/1.9 (compact lens...). If you want full integration and syncing strobes at above 1/125s, stay with S lenses or use the H lenses via adapter (careful, not the Hasselblad V lenses...that's a different adapter, all manual). If you want full integration and don't need to sync strobes at faster speeds than 1/125s, you can save some money by going with the Contax 645 lenses (but their IQ does not match Leica...Ok, maybe the Zeiss Apo Makro 120 does but it's a manual focus lens...). Regards, Martin

So to remember everything easily:

Fully compatible with adapter:

Contax 645 lenses

Hasselblad H lenses

Compatible without autofocus or aperture control (stopped down metering)

All the other lenses that exist with an adapter that fits them onto the Leica S2/S006/S007

Thanks to all of you for guiding me in this quest.  It might be available (somewhere), but for all of you that will encounter the same issues and have the same questions, I thought of saving you lots of time. Therefore, I have attached a two-page (2 pages) PDF document ("NON-Leica S Lenses working with S2") that will summarize exactly which lenses will work intuitively with the Leica S series cameras, and which adapter to look for.

Hope that helps.NON-Leica S Lenses working with S2.pdf

Cheerio.
