Iduna Posted October 7, 2015 Share #1 Posted October 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) In our neighbourhood I found a new location and ecided to explore its potential in the morning. One can watch many migrating birds there and I decided to be there a 6:30. It was just in time to catch the sunrise with a light veil of mist enticing the whole scenery. euston Posted October 7, 2015 Share #4 Posted October 7, 2015 My favourite time of day! The soft light of daybreak in these shots is beautiful. Very nicely done, Iduna!

pauledell Posted October 7, 2015 Share #6 Posted October 7, 2015 Iduna, A lovely series with the beautiful sunrise colors. I like the second one the most for its composition and the last for the colors. Paul
Louis Posted October 7, 2015 Share #7 Posted October 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Iduna, very dreamy atmosphere! My favorite is number 2. There is more going on in this shot and the framing is excellent!

Iduna Posted October 7, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted October 7, 2015 Euston, yes, the morning colours are quite different from those in the evening. For morning mist makes the much more pastellic.I was very surprised how quickly sun is up and that these moments before sunrise arr specially promissing. But one has to hurry, try several exposures and pick out the best one afterwards. Thanks for your nice comment. Sam, it works if you really set up your mind. And it is worthwhile all the effort. Thank you for your feedback. Paul, your choice is interesting. I hesitated a lot and lastly decided for this one, because it has the ful color range. Thanks for your time stopping by. Louis, thank you very much for your support with no 2. Also Paul did chose this one. In fact it has even more potential. Next time I'll extend my tripod over 2 meters and then try it from above a little bit. One has to wait until the waterflow is higher and then the damm will be flooded by a small waterfall. we did have very little rainfall these past weeks. Tom. this area where I live belongs to one of Germany's most populated regions. There is no free view. Everywhere you'll find houses, roads not to mention the noise even if it is a faint sound. Therefore I try to show the beauty where it can be found. That morning we only saw one other photographer with a long lens for birding. We do not have these vast pure landscapes, therfore framing is always a challenge here. Thanks for your encouraging comment.

platypus Posted October 7, 2015 Share #11 Posted October 7, 2015 Iduna, these are lovely photos and your delight in nature shows clearly in them. It's interesting to read that you must make such an effort to seek out your landscape subjects, having followed your posts here over a period of some years I would not have realised from your photos the difficulties you have to overcome, so well done! Of the three I like the third shot best, the cirrus cloud and contrails seem to echo the shapes of the water ponds.
Iduna Posted October 8, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted October 8, 2015 Stuart, as always, many thanks for stopping by and your time for feedback. Dee, thank you very much for your nice response. It is much appreciated feeling to be understood. I always try to extract the special charme of a place. Sometimes it easy at once but in most cases it needs a second or third visit. The position of the camera in the third picture could be higher to get even more of the water. Next time I'll carry a ladder...or climb on a foot stool at least because I want to extend my tripod then for at least 2 mtr or more. The parking place is very near so that this effort is not too much trouble. Let us see.
A miller Posted October 9, 2015 Share #13 Posted October 9, 2015 Hi Iduna! Welcome to the early morning club!! :) Very lovely colors. I think my favorite is the second. It has a very pleasant composition and pleasing morning colors in the atmosphere. I like how the stream is running through the frame and how the foreground is well exposed. I am not sure whether you had access to a tripod, but if you did I think you could have enhanced the image even further with a little longer exposure in order to capture more motion in the water to achieve that silky surreal look. Also, the lack of consistency in the sky, particularly in the upper right corner, is a little distracting. Not sure what has caused the lack of consistent tones. Again, if you had a tripod and the time, a soft ND grad filter could have preserved more of what was no doubt a deep blue, pink and violet bouquet of tones in the sky, and all the pixels captured in their natural state. The last is also very lovely in its composition; but, again, the stressed look of the tones in the sky in the upper right are a slight bit distracting. Having said this, the colors are amazing and the overall scene is very lovely.

It always helps to discover aspects in terms of improvement. Yes, I used a tripod, yes all pictures are longtime exposures, all are with ND grad 06. or 09. I use filters with a holder system from Hitech. With that type of thread filters I had a problem of vignetting even with the slim type so I switched to filter holder. But in some pictures this difference in grading appeared. Perhaps I have to change my workflow and processing skills here in LR. But I also guess that these problems appear if the camera is in a certain angle to the light and every filter has its own look. I will perhaps also buy a lensinghouse-filter (glass supposed to produce no kind of flare or colorcast) just to check if the result will be different. With my Zeiss lens I had no problems, maybe it is the old Leica lens which should be treated differently also. This is what makes photography so interesting because here one can create a special look and language.I'll kepp you updated.

Many wide angle lenses are prone to vignetting with the use of ND filters. LEE ND filter system makes a filter system that is specially made for WA lenses. You may want to look into it. I must say, though, that with the gentle ND grad that you used and only ONE filter (typically it takes at least two filters stacked, such as a polarizer and an ND, to create the vignetting on a good lens), I am a bit disappointed with the Leica lens here. I've seen youtube videos of people demonstrating ND and ND grad filters on their Canon and Nikon 35mm lenses with zero vignetting. That's why I assumed that you did not use any NDs with your images. In any case, the photos are indeed very enjoyable and I thank you for sharing them. Best, Adam
