MT0227 Posted October 4, 2015 Share #1 Posted October 4, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been shooting Nikon DLSRs for 25 years and was looking for a change. After a fair amount of research, and one somewhat impulsive purchase, I picked up my first Leica this past week @LeicaStoreSoho. Here's a shot I took in the rain on the way to my bus after work. This platform is quite incredible, the image renderings out of the box are exactly what I read/heard about --> The path of least resistance of what I see on the street and a final print in my hand. Adam Posted October 4, 2015 Share #2 Posted October 4, 2015 Very Nice! I like the composition and the mood of the picture. I am still hesitant to use mine in heavy rain, got it at the Soho store too. Welcome, and enjoy the camera!
Suede Posted October 4, 2015 Share #3 Posted October 4, 2015 That's a nice photo. I didn't realise that Nikon have been making DSLRs for 25 years, though.
Bill Livingston Posted October 4, 2015 Share #4 Posted October 4, 2015 (edited) The D1 came out in 1999.. but it doesn't really matter, either the original poster had been using both Nikon SLRs and DSLRs for 25 years, or he just got it wrong with his mental calculation. The real points remain... It's a great photo and the photographer is enjoying the experience - the 240 M-P seems to be meeting or exceeding his expectations... Which is nice to read... and as it should be... Edited October 4, 2015 by Bill Livingston
MT0227 Posted October 4, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted October 4, 2015 (edited) Bill hit it on the head, I'm just so used to reading/writing DSLR...so yes, both Nikon SLRs and DSLRs for 25 years. Adam, I had my camera protected in my bag or held under my coat ...don't be afraid of the rain Thanks for the kind words everyone. Bill Livingston Posted October 4, 2015 Share #6 Posted October 4, 2015 You are welcome... This initially looks like the same vantage point as a very well know photograph by Hoepker on 9/11 showing several young people sitting around talking while the twin towers burned in the background... It's not of course, much closer, but it reminded me very much of that image... Certainly a publishable photo though... this could pay for your M-P! stuny Posted October 4, 2015 Share #7 Posted October 4, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Marc - Welcome to the Forum, and based on this lovely photo I look forward to seeing many more of your images. And congratulations on your purchase. By the way - Even though your surname is not that unusual I might have known some relatives of yours when I was in high school: fraternal twins Richard and Robert. They'd be about 70 years old, now.
pauledell Posted October 5, 2015 Share #8 Posted October 5, 2015 Welcome to the forum. This is a marvelous picture with its meaningful composition and atmosphere. It is well worth pondering over for its meaning. Paul
MT0227 Posted October 5, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted October 5, 2015 Stuart/Paul...thanks for the kind words and welcome; I look forward to being part of the Leica community for many years to come. Bill, I believe Hoepker's photo was taken in Brooklyn, well east of the Site on the other side of the East River. My photo was taken directly across from the Site on the New Jersey side of the Hudson river at Paulus Hook. Stuart, I do not have any direct relatives by those names as far as I know. Paul...I was on the other side of the river that day when it all went down; in the far right building with the dome on top. My intent was to capture what once was (the memorial in the foreground) and what is now (Freedom Tower/New Skyline in the background). The weather provided the mood and backdrop that seemed to fit; never forget regardless of how cloudy it may get. I was fortunate this was day one with my new M, it made me want to look for things to see and capture; even in the rain on the way home after a long week. Regards, -Marc
Bill Livingston Posted October 5, 2015 Share #10 Posted October 5, 2015 (edited) It was Brooklyn, but I loved the fact your image reminded me of Hoepkers... I was at Ground Zero just a few weeks after the towers came down... I remember the flowers and temporary memorial, the nuns at the church opposite and most of all, the steam and the water and the arc lights on all night... and of course, the large screens all around the site. Dreadful times, but something amazing changed in New York, the city suddenly felt different and afterwards,as I flew home to the UK, I thought what a wonderful city, with wonderful, resilient, amazing people... I have returned several times since and that change is still there... It has always been one of my favourite cities... but now, it's not only the city itself, which has always been unique in its character, but the people... They are now what makes New York so special... Edited October 5, 2015 by Bill Livingston
