schmolinski Posted September 23, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, long time no posts from me. Busy time, and well other issues... Now I have the chance to post two - for me - impressive images of the world largest sailing ship that has been released for test drive from the dock. Over all length is 147 meters. Estimated costs approx. 100 million Euros. It is said that this ship was ordered by a Russian oligarch. Cheers Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted September 23, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 23, 2015 Beautiful photos, beautiful subject. Interestingly, in spite of its size, which includes a helicopter pad and swimming pool, has an underwater viewing area, and it only sleeps 20 guests. It's good to see you posting again, and I trust you are well.

wlaidlaw Posted September 27, 2016 Share #9 Posted September 27, 2016 Bigger indeed than Starship's Royal Clipper, at 134 metres. I have been for a holiday on that and it is very impressive when leaving harbour and they set all 42 sails on 5 masts. I am not sure if I find the White Pearl terribly elegant. Great B&W photos though. Wilson
Louis Posted October 12, 2016 Share #10 Posted October 12, 2016 I guess this is the result of all those years of communism!... Lenin would be happy to see what this country has become! I shot this one in Santa Barbara, CA. I thought they were shooting a new James Bond! Welcome, dear visitor! mikemgb Posted October 12, 2016 Share #11 Posted October 12, 2016 (edited) Those are beautiful photographs, very nicely done, however I am going to go against general opinion here and state that I believe that is one ugly boat! IkarusJohn Posted October 12, 2016 Share #12 Posted October 12, 2016 (edited) I'm with Mike. The Starck designed motor yacht A is pretty ugly in the flesh; the sailing version is seriously ugly. In terms of it being the world's largest sailing ship, not quite - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_large_sailing_vessels This unfortunate craft is bested by the SS Great Eastern (211m), the Club Med 2 (194m), Wind Surf (188m), Aqua City (179m), Usuki Pioneer (162m), and equalled by Preußen (147m). That's just in waterline length. At this size, ships (i.e., vessels too big to be carried by another vessel) tend to be measured by tonnage. If the claim is that it's the heaviest sailing ship in the world, then its performance matches its horrendous looks! Maybe it has the tallest masts, which is a rather tragic claim to fame. The Daily Mail claims a top speed of "24 mph" - who measures nautical speed in mph? Anyway, slow as well ... wlaidlaw Posted October 12, 2016 Share #13 Posted October 12, 2016 Philip Stark is a pretty eccentric guy. He designed the Asahi Beer building in Tokyo, which was just in front of the B&B I was staying in. I asked the B&B owner what on earth the thing on the top was supposed to be. His answer was that it was apparently meant to represent a Japanese hop but the locals all know it as the building of the "Flying Green Turd". I was looking at Roman Abramovich's ultra modern looking and huge Eclipse Yacht in Monaco last year. I commented that it looked as if it should have have sea to air missiles in it. The yacht broker friend I was with replied: "That's because it does and an escape submarine." Wilson Welcome, dear visitor!
