RAW engine - same in Essentials and LR?

Quick question .... I've been using Essentials 11 for processing M240 dng's.  I think I'm on version 7.4 of ACR, which I understand to be the latest available for Essentials 11.

I've not yet tried the free access to LR that came packaged with the M240.

Does LR use exactly the same raw engine that I'm using in Essentials 11?

In other words, would the output look identical between Essentials and LR (eg, in terms of it extracting the same resolution, similar tonality etc)

As an aside, I'm also in the very initial stages of exploring Capture One Pro 8 as a possible new raw converter.  Any thoughts on differences / similarities between Capture One and Adobe products would also be appreciated -- again, I'm only interested in quality of output (rather than actual functional use).

Thanks

Yes. Obviously the interface is different, but the underlying raw converting software is the same.

I would rate C1 Pro higher than ACR, both in detail  and in colour rendering. It is easy to use Essentials (or LR or PS) as an external editor in C1.

Many thanks for your reply.

As I start to get up to speed with C1 Pro 8, I'd agree with you so far that it's raw conversion is superior (eg easier to get more accurate colours) than ACR.

One other thing I like immensely about the latest C1 Pro is its new Grain function. I recently did an image (a scenery with Mont Blanc in the distance) and applied some grain, and could get the C1 Pro 8 grain to look indistinguishable from a drum-scanned slide of the same scene, in that the "grain" appears where it's more apparent with film (a highlight vs shadow thing). It's by far the best grain application that I've used (I am floored at how close it looks to film), noting that some 3rd party plug ins seem to create a veil of noise more equally across the whole image, which never looked right.
