clickysteve Posted September 5, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 5, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today I discovered a crack in my Typ 240's viewfinder window. I have no idea how it's happened, and am beginning to doubt myself now as to whether it was there for ages or not. Photo below: https://cldup.com/ujFOpNwV0HY/QWNoyy.jpg It doesn't have any effect on the actual operation of the camera, and you can't see the crack through the viewfinder when focussing, so it's not as bad as it could (easily) have been. I'm thinking about ignoring it because of this - at least for the time being - rather than sending it off for a costly repair. Do you think that's a fair enough course of action? To be honest, I'm pretty angry at myself that this could have happened, and probably looking for a bit of validation that it's not a massive deal.

Mornnb Posted September 6, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 6, 2015 The viewfinder window is part of the top case assembly. To get this fixed likely requires a complete replacement of the top case, assuming all the glass within the Rangefinder is fine. It may not be as costly to fix as you think if there is no damage to the rangefinder.
jaapv Posted September 6, 2015 Share #3 Posted September 6, 2015 Yes, Leica will possibly replace the top, not too much work anyway. If they can replace the lens only the cost would be not too much. I would begin by asking them if I were you.
John Black Posted September 6, 2015 Share #4 Posted September 6, 2015 Years ago on my M8 the eye piece unscrewed from the top plate, so it seems it would be easy to fix - but that's just my guess. The best course is to send the picture to your Leica dealer or Leica Customer Support. If you're in the US, you may also try DAG. DAG is an independent Leica repair specialist. Don's price will be less (most likely), but his backlog can be long.
jaapv Posted September 6, 2015 Share #5 Posted September 6, 2015 I thought of third-party repairers, but the problem lies in obtaining the spare part. The lens is unlikely to be the same one as a film M.
semi-ambivalent Posted September 7, 2015 Share #6 Posted September 7, 2015 Yes, Leica will possibly replace the top... Question, if you know: Why would Leica choose to replace the entire top cover for a cracked glass? Is that glass 'permanently' fixed into the top assembly? Just wondering. thanks, s-a
jaapv Posted September 7, 2015 Share #7 Posted September 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica replaced the complete top on my M9 when the screws of the hot shoe broke. I think it is the standard replacement unit. Balancing labour costs against part costs.

Balancing labour costs against part costs. Thanks. I wondered, thinking a new top would interfere with the serial number. But a look at the wiki cleared that up. So efficiency takes precedence. s-a
