maximilianm3 Posted September 3, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 3, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I took a lot of pictures lately with my M3 and some, actually very few have this line on top or on the right. Is this a light leak or some other problem? It's visible on both colour and B W shots. Any suggestions? Thanks Welcome, dear visitor! Thanks In the other thread that Steve posted the conclusion was that it was due to a "veil seal" and changing lenses in mid-roll. Did you change lenses on during these two rolls at all?
maximilianm3 Posted September 3, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted September 3, 2015 (edited) Hi, No i did not change lenses. edit, now that I think of it, on the BW shot I may have done, but I have rolls with this 'line' where I definitely did not change lenses. You don't need to change lenses, light still gets inside through the lens aperture, the wider the aperture, the brighter the light, or the longer the time between shots the more likely it will show any leak in this area which is at the bottom of the shutter (the image being projected upside down and back to front). Steve Emailed DAG about what it would cost to fix this; and in the mean time, I guess I'll keep it set on f/22 while not taking pictures. Darn it. TomB_tx Posted September 3, 2015 Share #6 Posted September 3, 2015 Snap on a lens cap right after each picture. That's the classic Leica technique - since the original Ur-Leica had to be capped to advance the film, as the shutter wasn't self-capping! Yep...thats what I'll do until I'm ready to part with my baby.
pinchers of peril Posted September 3, 2015 Share #8 Posted September 3, 2015 Wouldn't a light leak lead to a bright streak vs a dark streak on the film?
machmaphoto Posted September 3, 2015 Share #9 Posted September 3, 2015 I would rather think this looks like a shutter problem with the curtains.
elgenper Posted September 3, 2015 Share #10 Posted September 3, 2015 Wouldn't a light leak lead to a bright streak vs a dark streak on the film? Indeed it would. This is something else. A sharp, straight edge, perfectly parallel to the image edge. I´d guess something is sticking out from one of the shutter curtains, possibly a frayed bottom ribbon. Does this happen mainly with high shutter speeds (1/250 - 1/1000)?
250swb Posted September 3, 2015 Share #11 Posted September 3, 2015 (edited) Wouldn't a light leak lead to a bright streak vs a dark streak on the film? The dark streak at the top of the image is the native exposure, the brighter part beneath it is the overexposure caused by the leak. Steve Ahhh...that sheds a lot of light on my over exposure problems! (no pun intended) Edited September 3, 2015 by rpavich

Steve Ok, well then that makes sense. It also explains the overall over-exposed look to the sample images. I wonder what is blocking the one strip from the light. Darn it. Keep us posted as to what he says he thinks the issue is and what the repair involves. I'm curious what the actual cause of the light leak is, ie where the leak is coming from. rpavich Posted September 3, 2015 Share #15 Posted September 3, 2015 (edited) Keep us posted as to what he says he thinks the issue is and what the repair involves. I'm curious what the actual cause of the light leak is, ie where the leak is coming from. He said that it's a problem with the seals or something like that. He said that it would be expensive because there is a lot of disassembly involved. Cost is $150.00 US and will take about 4 weeks. He also said just keep a lens cap on and don't change lenses in the light. I also talked to Sherry about it and I'm thinking of going with her because I have to have some other work done also and she's closer to me (east coast) Edited September 3, 2015 by rpavich
pinchers of peril Posted September 3, 2015 Share #16 Posted September 3, 2015 I've heard good things about Sherry. What else are you having done with the M6? Changing out the viewfinder?
rpavich Posted September 3, 2015 Share #17 Posted September 3, 2015 I've heard good things about Sherry. What else are you having done with the M6? Changing out the viewfinder? Yep. I don't really have a flare problem but I do have a problem in very low light and she said that the MP Viewfinder Mod really helps low light shooting...like night and day...she said she was blown away the first time she looked through a modded viewfinder in low light. I'm looking to get it done in about a month or two...no later than the end of October. I'm planning on another trip to San Diego to visit my Mom and sisters and I'm going to make sure I have the M6 in good working order.
pinchers of peril Posted September 4, 2015 Share #18 Posted September 4, 2015 How long did she say it would take? I've heard great things about DAG, but it seems like he takes a long time to get you your camera back. From what I hear, Sherry seems to have a faster turn around. friedeye Posted September 10, 2015 Share #20 Posted September 10, 2015 Have the same problem on my M2. Happens when the shot is left in the gate. I sent my camera to Youxin to see if he could find the problem - he couldn't see anything, but added a light baffle. Didn't help. I've used a flashlight in a pitch black room and can see nothing coming through the curtains. Frustrating. So… now using a lens cap. Or, when shooting on the street, f/22 between shots. Please post, if/when you find a solution. Thanks, and good luck.
