MP "a la carte" is brass or is zinc ???

Recommended Posts

It's made of brass.  Your Spanish dealer is wrong.

If it's a dull matte black color then it's a black chrome finish.

If it's a shiny black color then it's black paint finish.

Both finishes are made of brass.  Don't believe me?  Use sandpaper and find out  :p

My heart did not want to believe the truth.

MY  Spanish dealer is wrong. ?? jajaja ....... yes yes yes ..................

Sorry DavidKKHansen I Don't believe you.

Now I wake, you can wake up or not is your choice, no longer makes Leica except brass MP BP else is shiny silver - aluminum, zinc, equals, is shit to me.

I no longer believe in Leica, the brass died with the M9-P.

I'll sell my MMonochrom and my MP zinc or aluminum.

I do not want to know that this is in my equipment, I pay good money for brass rather than aluminum or zinc.

Good luck with your dreams, friends.

Cool thread. Is this MP a black chrome, as in an a la carte? I'd bet what you're seeing is a surface applied to the brass so as to properly accept whatever constitutes black chrome. Rather than wasting your time here why not contact Leica? As my Philosophy professor was fond of saying 'always go to the primary material'.

And go take some pictures,

Nice pictures of your MP and Monochrome.  Both those cameras have the black chrome finish.  You get it by starting with brass as the base material and then proceed to plate it with other metals to achieve a matte black finish.  This finish is very durable towards wear and tear.  If you use those cameras for a very long time, eventually you will start to see a golden brass showing.

Leica used a zinc top plate only for the M6 and M4-P.  This was done because it was cheaper to make and at that time Leica was in a bit of financial trouble.  The zinc top plate looks similar to the modern black chrome finish, but they are not the same.  If your dealer thinks otherwise, then he hasn't done his homework properly.

If you don't believe me, then sell me your MP  :)

If you had wanted brass to show through you should have bough a black paint camera, not a black chrome camera.

Whether the black chrome plating is made over a zinc base or a brass base the first layer of plating is a layer of silver nickel, this is the 'undercoat' and helps the top chrome layer adhere, and will show through when the top black layer wears through. But all modern Leica M type cameras (film or digital) are brass without any exceptions.

I recommend this thread to anybody who needs a laugh.

My Mp today go to dealer and I look for a MP BP new, twoo MP´s, my MMonochrom is in the air.

Let me make sure I understand correctly:  You are going to go back to the very dealer who claims it's a zinc top plate and sell him your camera for less than what you paid for it???  In that case, a fool and his money (cameras) are soon parted...  Remember to sell him your Noctilux as well, because the outer barrel is made of aluminum alloy.  Would hate for your fingers to touch anything but the most purest German/Portuguese brass!

I recommend this thread to anybody who needs a laugh.

Indeed!   :D

Early M4-Ps had a brass plate.

Correct.  Also all M6 TTL's were with zinc top plates.  Except some of the last batches, which were made of brass.

As a general rule, one can assume that M4-P's and M6 TTL's are with zinc top plates.  The point I was trying to get across to the OP was that there was no way that his MP (and Monochrome) were made of zinc...
