rramesh Posted August 19, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 19, 2015 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Man in Hong Kong drops Leica from balcony on to granite floor. It survives the fall and works. Article is in Chinese. Use Google Translate and have a laugh at the poor translation. http://news.memehk.com/posts/9859 Edited August 19, 2015 by rramesh

StS Posted August 19, 2015 Share #3 Posted August 19, 2015 ...also reported by Dpreview... It appears it dropped on the lens hood, which absorbed most of the energy, but still.... Stefan
ThePioneer Posted September 17, 2015 Share #4 Posted September 17, 2015 ...not that I don't believe all this but... I think I will avoid tossing my M9 off of any balconies.
TomB_tx Posted September 17, 2015 Share #5 Posted September 17, 2015 In the 1960s the USA Leica Photography had a brief report of a sky diver who dropped his M3 from a few thousand feet onto a grassy field. He found it, scraped off the mud, and used it. The glass pressure plate was cracked. I doubt if the M9 would fare as well.
jdlaing Posted September 17, 2015 Share #6 Posted September 17, 2015 We won't know that until we see one dropped like that.

Leica Frog Posted September 23, 2015 Share #8 Posted September 23, 2015 I believe there's some loosing with the focusing ring of the lens and they didn't show in every angle view, if the damage is limited on the hood only, so the owner's very very lucky. Tony Mac Posted September 23, 2015 Share #9 Posted September 23, 2015 When I was in photography school the Leica guy that came and did a demo stood on an M8 and jumped up and down...I certainly wouldn't do that with any DSLR.

Stefan Well the half case may have absorbed much of the impact with the hood damaged by secondary impact if it bounced. The fractured tile probably also absorbed much of the impact. If it had been a few cm either side it might have been 'cactus profundus'. Can't believe the lens elements and rangefinder aren't well out of alignment. No external visible damage doesn't mean no internal injuries on the lens, rangefinder, and the sensor. Wonder if the owner checked all that afterwards.
