asiafish Posted July 17, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 17, 2015 Hi All, thought it would be good to take the XVario out for a spin to-day.. I absolutely forgot what a dream this camera is to use..... Hmmm, maybe I'll take mine with me this weekend. I've been shooting only the X113 lately.
c4change Posted July 23, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 23, 2015 The XV is a sweet camera. Those who got their hands on it love it. Those who shop on the paper miss it. The 113 is my favorite X so far but I've got to say the XV holds well against the X.
gbealnz Posted July 23, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 23, 2015 I agree. Like a fool I sold mine, and thought I could live without it. Wrong. Fortunately I have another one coming, and am very happy. Biggest regret is that I also sold off the EVF2, and need to find another, doh, why do I do this to myself?Gary
gbealnz Posted July 24, 2015 Share #5 Posted July 24, 2015 OK, it arrived, and looks wonderful. Not mint, but at the price, I'll not complain. Firmware was 1.0. It is now 1.1. A question, and I'll look silly no doubt. The Auto ISO setting, where in the past I would opt for the minimum shutter speed, I can now select 1-1000/th. I understand this OK. But there is also an Auto setting. Does this Auto setting choose the speed based on the lens focal length setting? In other words is the Auto setting "intuitive"? Either way, I'm a very happy camper.Regards Gary
waloszek Posted July 24, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 24, 2015 >> Does this Auto setting choose the speed based on the lens focal length setting? In other words is the Auto setting "intuitive"? I think so, but I do not know for sure -- it does not seem to be documented... (this feature was added with firmware update 1.1) Best regards, Gerd
gbealnz Posted July 24, 2015 Share #7 Posted July 24, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you Gerd, you are the fountain of (X-Vario) knowledge I normally turn to. I agree, not much to be found which is why I asked here. The X-Vario insrructions, online, are obviously from the earlier version of firmware. This being added with the update makes the old instructions a little dated. Logically it makes sense, at the wide end of the zoom, the shutter speed could easily be lower, than say the tele end. Logic sometimes is not what it should be though, at times. Gary
waloszek Posted July 25, 2015 Share #8 Posted July 25, 2015 (edited) Thank you for your kind words, Gary. They stimulated me to find it out myself. So I went to the "Auto ISO Settings" in the menu, set "Slowest Speed" to "Auto", left the menu and put the lens cap on the lens. Then I varied the focal length (28, 35, 50, 70), pressed the shutter button and looked at the readout (which appeared in red because of the darkness). I got: 28 mm: 1/30 s, 35 mm: 1/40 s, 50 mm: 1/50 s, 70 mm: 1/80 s. In the middle between 50 mm and 70 mm I got 1/60 s. All in all, this confirms that the slowest speed is based on the focal length setting -- and is intuitive (although it does not follow exactly the 1/f rule...). I will add this information to my X Vario pages on my Website in due course. Best regards, Gerd P.S.: You can also go into a darker room with a window or so to verify this by turning the camera around. If it is brighter, the readout will get white (correct exposure), and if it is even brighter, the shutter speeds will get faster. gbealnz Posted July 25, 2015 Share #9 Posted July 25, 2015 Thank you for this Gerd, and yes, I will go try it for myself. Well, seems logic is alive and well, good to hear. Regards Gary
asiafish Posted July 25, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 25, 2015 For any questions about X Vario firmware 1.1, I would suggest looking in the manual for the X113 with the singular exception of focal-length issues for obvious reasons. The 1.1 firmware is essentially the same as what the X113 shipped with.
gbealnz Posted July 25, 2015 Share #11 Posted July 25, 2015 (edited) Ha, never thought of that, thank you. Makes me wonder though, why not amend the Instructions? No, not the hard copies, but the online versions at least?I'll take a look. And further to the post above by Gerd, I too tried it and yes, the min speed does change with the focal length change, when zooming. Very neat. The tinkerer in me wondered if I could "bias it up a bit" but setting an exposuve compensation, but no, it stayed the same. Still, a good move. Wenge Posted July 27, 2015 Share #12 Posted July 27, 2015 (edited) The prints from XV are outstanding, first camera I've found no sharpening needed. This camera is best used to be seen. Edited July 27, 2015 by Wenge
gbealnz Posted July 27, 2015 Share #13 Posted July 27, 2015 This camera is best used to be seen. Could not agree more with you on that. It certainly does. Gary

silverwren Posted August 2, 2015 Share #15 Posted August 2, 2015 My X Vario has 1.0. What do I need to do to get the updated firmware? I am not the original owner. I just got the camera a few weeks ago. Thanks.
jwarren Posted August 2, 2015 Share #16 Posted August 2, 2015 My X Vario has 1.0. What do I need to do to get the updated firmware? I am not the original owner. I just got the camera a few weeks ago. Thanks. There is an updated version, 1.1. Check here: http://us.leica-camera.com/Service-Support/Support/Downloads?category=93781&subcategory=103159&type=108942&language=93871 There are instructions pinned to this sub-forum, and at the link above. Good luck! The 1.1 is a step up for sure, and it installed just fine for me. Of note, significant improvement to the Auto-ISO settings.

kknox55@gmail.com Posted August 11, 2015 Share #20 Posted August 11, 2015 (edited) GBELNZ, I just purchased an X Vario to go along with my X-113. I was so happy with the photos and ease of use. The XV has outstanding color rendition straight out of the camera. I picked up a viewfinder if you have not already from KEH. They have a Leica version for $349, but I bought the Olympus VF-2 for $199 in ex+. They say they work the same I'm told. Hope you are enjoying your repurchace. I have rebought no less than 3 cameras. An M8, Contax G and all lens, Fuji X-PRO 1. I have learned never to sell the accessories. So Hard and expensive to replace. You can always sell them later. Enjoy Kevin Edited August 11, 2015 by kknox55@gmail.com
