kdriceman Posted July 9, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a very tiny pinhole in 2nd curtain of my M3. I had noticed some partial over exposures and could not determine a pattern, so I shined a flashlight on the shutter and noticed a pinhole in the 2nd curtain. It should only affect a frame if I fail to advance the film (and reset the shutter) immediately after I take a shot. But, I obviously don't do that all the time. The question i have: Are replacement shutter curtains available for the M3? If so, where, how much and who is a good resource to perform the work? Thanks KDR Welcome, dear visitor! spydrxx Posted July 9, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2015 DAG (Don Goldberg), Sherrie Krauter, Youxin Ye, or Gus Lazzari would be my choices in the USA
Michael Geschlecht Posted July 9, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 9, 2015 (edited) Hello KDR, I had something similar to this happen a number of years ago. I took the camera to Leitz who fixed it in such a manner that altho the curtain looks somewhat estheticaly challenged: It has functioned flawlessly for these many years. Translation. It appears that it is not so hard to properly seal a pinhole like yours or mine & for the original curtain to continue operating properly for a long time. I'm sure Spydrxx's choices of people can do the same thing just as well. Also: It might be beneficial to clean your film guide rails & their channels with a plain, dry Q-tip. NO solvents. TomB_tx Posted July 10, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 10, 2015 A couple years ago I was given a 1955 dual-stroke M3 with a detached 2nd curtain and other issues. Youxin Ye replaced the curtain and did a full CLA quickly and reasonably. Generally I go to DAG with my better gear, as he has been the most careful of the techs I've tried. A few weeks ago I sent a couple of lenses to Youxin and a couple others to DAG. DAG has already repaired and shipped them back, while Youxin indicated he is swamped and it could be a couple months. Of course, that can run in cycles, but both will tell you how busy they are before you send them gear. BTW, pinholes are indeed often patched in ways that hold up for years.
kdriceman Posted July 12, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted July 12, 2015 Thanks. I discussed with Sherry Krauter and have sent it off to her. In addition to her excellent reputation, she's very responsive and her pricing is reasonable.
