BerndReini Posted July 2, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 2, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I played with a friend's Leica Q today. What an impressive camera. If Leica came out with a 40mm f2 version it would make me happy. I shoot mostly 35mm and 50mm and I believe that a great 40mm would be very doable and really be all I would need for travel.
Advertisement Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Hi BerndReini, Take a look here 40mm version please. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bobbywise Posted July 2, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 2, 2015 I said pretty much exactly the same thing in the sticky post announcing the Q. A fixed lens digital Leica based on the 40 mm summicron-c from the CL would be awesome. Futhermore, like with the Fuji X100 family, a WCL and TCL would pretty much make a complete system. Many of the fixed lens RF bodies from the 60s/70s had lenses around 40 mm. I still use my Olympus UC (which has a nice 42 mm lens).
BerndReini Posted July 2, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted July 2, 2015 I have a Fuji GF670 with a 90mm lens for 6x7, and my most used 4x5 lens is a Rodenstock 150mm. That focal length equivalent to around 40mm is just awesome.
bobbywise Posted July 2, 2015 Share #4 Posted July 2, 2015 The Konica S1.6 with its 45 mm F1.6 lens is also another great fixed lens RF I enjoy using. Come on Leica, bring out a 40 - 45 mm fixed lens digital body !
mjh Posted July 2, 2015 Share #5 Posted July 2, 2015 If Leica came out with a 40mm f2 version it would make me happy. Leica had considered a 35 mm f2 and decided against; I don’t think a 40 mm version is likely.

earleygallery Posted July 3, 2015 Share #7 Posted July 3, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Q already has 35mm and 50mm options, so you just use the 35mm setting and crop a little off. Digital zoom, it's the future.

BerndReini Posted July 3, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted July 3, 2015 Leica had considered a 35 mm f2 and decided against; I don’t think a 40 mm version is likely. 35mm as a first Q release would not have been a smart move because they would have been going head to head with the Sony RX1 and the Zeiss lens. I think 28mm was a smart choice. Same coverage as the iphone, good for selfies etc. I personally find 28mm too wide for most of what I do, and the digital zoom to 50mm from 28mm is not an option for me. I don't care what people think the future is. I am a big believer in big pixels and using the lens at the coverage it was designed for. l agree that Leica probably will not release a 40mm version, so I'll just wait for the interchangeable lens version. Sandokan Posted July 3, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 3, 2015 +1 for 40mm. Just off on vacation and I am taking my Minilux with the 40 Summarit. I also like the Sigma idea to have the same camera available with different fixed lenses. I prefer that to the hassle of changing lenses. As there is a Q with 28 lens, I would now like a 2nd Q with 60mm lens and this pairing would be good enough. My ideal would be 3 Qs with 24/2, 40/1.4 and 80/1.8 fixed lenses. Yeah, I feel the same way. I find 28 mm a bit wide for general usage. Having said that, a few years back I solely used a GF3 with 14 mm pancake lens, and survived. I tend to use 35/40/50/75, and really feel that 40 mm is the sweet spot FOV. I don't like cropping either, and really feel a fixed lens camera with WCL and TCL adapters are a good solution.
BerndReini Posted July 3, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted July 3, 2015 You are right. That will be the solution: an excellent teleconverter. I'm fine if it takes out a stop of light, as long as it is of high optical quality. Then you could shoot with the adapter for portraits and outdoor photography and without it at the 28mm focal length in low light.
R99 Posted July 4, 2015 Share #13 Posted July 4, 2015 If the Q doesn't cost as much as a summilux or summicron lens, I'll gladly purchase another Q that comes in 50mm. It saves the hassle of having to swap lenses or running into sensor dust problem.
R99 Posted July 4, 2015 Share #14 Posted July 4, 2015 on top of one free body, I get one free charger and battery, both of which can be spares.

So 40mm is of no interest to me but I would be interested in a 50 mm version
kkonkkrete Posted July 4, 2015 Share #17 Posted July 4, 2015 Sigma DP2 Merrill or the newer Quadro is a fixed lens ~40mm equivalent digital camera with a stunningly good lens and glorious foveon sensor. IQ is at least as good as the Q and a fraction of the price. Only problem is you can't use it below ISO 100 and the autofocus is r e a l l y slow (super accurate though). It a superb camera though. I actually don't really like the neither-fish-nor-fowl 40-45mm focal length. 35mm is great, 50mm is great. Somewhere in between, not so great, IMO.

If Fuji can do it, so can Leica
