New printer required, any recommendations?

I have started the search for a new printer. For the last few years I have been using an Epson R1800 and it has served me very well.

I am looking for something that will print up to A4 and give nice results. If it was a little more economic with it's ink usage and replacement costs than the R1800 that would be a good thing too. I am quite interested in trying some black and white printing, so something that has potential for that would be top of the list. It will be purely for printing so I have no need of an all in one printer, scanner, fax type machine. Is there anything that might suit my needs for around 150GBP or am I going have to spend a bit more? I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Many thanks.

I have been checking out reviews etc and have been reading decent things about the Canon Pixma iP8750. I wasn't thinking about another A3 printer but it seems like a good machine. Anyone have experience of them regarding the ink usage and quality of the prints?

For comparable sized prints (17"), consider the Epson 3880.  Since its replacement, the SureColor P800, was recently announced, you should be able to get a good discount by shopping around.  Or, for 13" prints, the P600 is a great machine (replacing the R3000, which has had some problems).

Keep in mind that printers are loss leaders for the manufacturers….they make money off the inks….so manufacturer rebates are often available, sometimes in conjunction with dealer discounts.  The business model is much like razors and razor blades.

If you're serious about printing, it's worth the investment, but only if the rest of your workflow is up to snuff.  Any of these machines will do well with color and b/w.  An alternative, though, is to consider keeping your R1800 and putting in an all-b/w ink set, e.g., Piezography.

Much of this has been discussed here many times….use the search box to pull up lots of threads.

Thanks for your replies. I don't have the R1800 anymore unfortunately or I might have considered converting it to black and white inks, that's a pity. They look like great printers that you mention but maybe a bit pricey for me. I will try and dig up some posts to read.

  • 2 weeks later...

I would look at the new Epson printer that was released this week.  I have replaced the Epson 4900 with a 3880.  I like the 3880, but the newer Epson apparently has an additional black/gray cartridge so it may do better with black and white printers.  Since I can print right now, I am waiting for some reviews to come in, but if I didn't own a printer, I'd probably go with the newer Epson.

No it doesn't….the inks are improved (hence the name SureColor), but no additional inks.  Some reviews have already been linked and discussed in other threads (search box)….especially P600 (that replaces the R3000), which is the 13" version using the same new ink set as the 17" P800 (that replaces the 3880).

I mentioned the P600 already in this thread, but recommended the OP look at a discounted 3880 because of his budgetary constraints.
