Help with Keywords LR 6

Recommended Posts

I have started to use Keywords. I have entered some retrospectively and on import.

They show up in the Keyword list and I can call Photo's up from there. However I can not call photo's up using the Text facility. I choose Text, Keywords, All and enter the Keyword.

I get no 'No Photographs match this criteria' Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike.

I have solved my Keyword problem. I borrowed the LR 4 book by Scott Kelby and read that I should click on the area above and at the left of the panel above the film strip and select All Photo's or where ever I wish to search.

Thanks for looking at post. Sorry to waste time.

Yes, LR needs to know where to search for your desired keywords. I use the facility often and find it essential to managing my library. Here is one tip: if you search for a specific term often, consider selecting all found images and place them in a Collection. That is another vital asset. I use Collections for all ongoing projects and save a lot of time.

Thanks for comments. There is so much to know about LR. I suppose the best way is to take a 'Need to Know Approach'.

I am reading up re Collections. I am just about to order the Silver EfexPro package for my film and digital mono files.

Another great learning curve coming up!!

I have just bought an MM, used, 100 odd actuation.

Not sure if it will completely replace my M6 and M3,but makes an interesting change.

Thanks Howard and David.

I agree with the 'Need to Know' approach, as Kinross says.  My preferred guide is Victoria Bampton's Lightroom the Missing FAQ (http://www.lightroomqueen.com/shop/adobe-lightroom-cc6-the-missing-faq/) because it is organised around answers to "how do I do x ... ?".

I had both of the Kelby and Evening books, both good references, organised systematically along the lines of the menu options, but I found the FAQ approach more intuitive for me.  The Kost videos are really good too.  But I learn better from written instructions esp. if solving a particular task.

I've never got to grips with keywords in LR. A couple of times I've tried to create a keyword system, but it has always mushroomed out of control: too many keywords, not particularly well organised.

Can anyone suggest a resource with a good basic hierarchy/structure? How many categories of keywords? How detailed is it helpful to go? I realise that much of this is personal, but some tips would be helpful? Is there an industry standard hierarchy anywhere?

Thanks again for replies. I have just taken delivery of Martin Evening LR 6. This should help me.

The link to the tutorials is very good.I have looked at some and will be able to run them on my IPad while working in LR  on my Mac.A good way of using them.

Paul,it seems to me that setting up a Keyword method is not for the faint hearted. I am learning and keeping it very simple.

I suspect you are a professional and probably have one or more large catalogues. I wish you luck. You could try one of the tutorials in the link,it may be very useful to you.

Remember that the whole point of keywords is to help you to find a picture. It probably doesn't matter if you collect lots of them or if you don't have a structure for them (you're not developing the image equivalent of the Dublin Core) - if a keyword seems applicable when you catalogue a photo, chances are it will also spring to mind when you search for it.

Keywords are a better solution than folders for organising any kind of document. Things tend to get lost in a folder structure; keyword searches will always find everything tagged.
