Lightroom verses Photoshop for processing a print job.

I am currently offshore Nigeria with my laptop and no printer. I am preparing myself for starting on a new venture in printing when I get home, so with time on my side I have been playing around in both Lightroom and Photoshop simulating preparing a photo for print and for the love of me I cant get comfortable with the lightroom print module.

First of all I was having difficulties with getting the picture to show up correctly in landscape mode but later found out that the issue was because I do not have a printer hooked up to my laptop.

I then wanted to see a print preview so that I could make sure that the picture file was big enough that I was sending to the printer but also I cant get that in Lightroom.

I then started playing around in Photoshop and I can get all of that above info right there in Photoshop..................so I am thinking Photoshop is the way to go when it comes to sending images to a printer.

For me anyway I always end up with the final image that I want to print in Photoshop so it makes sense to just go straight from Photoshop to the printer...............what about you digital guys?

Below is a Panorama that was stitched together using (I think 27 images) from my Leica M9P and 90mm APO and although I need to do some tidying up with the sky :):(:), Photoshop made it very easy for me to see what this image will look like printed 17" x 96" at a 298 ppi resolution (the 298 ppi was calculated by Photoshop) which is something also that lightroom cant/wont do :(

Shouldn't you find out what ppi the printer will resolve and not let Photoshop invent a figure for you? But first you've got to sort out the serious problems in the sky which Photoshop is definitely the tool for. You might want to buy some dedicated panorama stitching software.

Either will work just fine.  Both will soft proof accurately.  PS has greater image editing capability, of course.  LR has the benefit that it automatically scales the amount of output sharpening to the size of the print, whereas in PS you have to do that manually (typically creating multiple print files for different sizes).

Use whichever you're most comfortable with...

Any recommendations? I looked at the Gigapan software but didn't like it at the time...........might be worth another look

If you find you are most comfortable with Photoshop why would you hesitate to use it primarily? It is true that LR has certain

minor comparative limitations.

I aint comfortable with either of them in the print mode as I have never printed before................ hence the question

Have you tried the merging feature in LR6, I just used it for the first time and made a 24x36 " print on my Epson SP7900 . I don't merge images as a rule but have to say was very impressed. LR creates a new dng file as opposed to a tiff I Don't think other software programs do this. I think when you get your printer set up you will be able to decide quickly what works best for you.

Neil I have been using LR since beta 1 and this version is by far the best. I would encourage you to invest in the upgrade its worth it. If you read the link that Jeff has posted you will see just how much more you can do with this version.

That's ok, this is the intended behavior. Adobe are ensuring your enduring customer loyalty by beating you around the head with a stick then kicking you in the nuts when you're lying on the ground senseless.

More simply, Adobe wants people to buy the full 'cloud package', not merely upgrade at the reduced cost.  The upgrade was so buried on their site that companies selling Adobe software like B&H didn't even realize there was an upgrade option.  I called Adobe instead and had the new version in minutes.
