Film M tripod - base plate with centred tripod socket?

Hi All,

Does anyone use an accessory base plate for their film M with a *central* threaded socket that allows the camera to be mounted centrally on a tripod ball head? Any chance of a photo of the plate attached to the camera so I can see how it all fits together?

I setup my M6 for a long exposure last weekend (10 stop ND filter, remote release, tripod) and the positioning of the threaded socket over on the far right of the base plate gave me two heart attacks in as many minutes!

Really Right Stuff adapter plate or Photoquip ML grip both position the tripod socket in the center of the camera.  The RSS can also be used with Arca-Swiss style heads.

I don't have a specialist plate but when I know I'll be using my film bodies on a tripod I take the Leica accessory handgrip (14 405) with me. This provides a nice solid central tripod socket.

I have used several models, but my preferred one is the silver ML-Grip by Photo Equip.net, which incorporates the baseplate surrounding the camera's baseplate and a grip. It has a central tripod socket, and, although it isn't longitudinally grooved, it fits nicely in an ARCA-Swiss clamp as well.

Hi Ric, I have this grip from Leica and I can fix my MP and M7 in almost central position on my mono or tripod.

and it also allows me to hold securely the camera with a tele lens (90 or 135)

Hi Henry,

I can see 14405 in small text on the bottom. :-)

Another option. This work well with Arc Swiss type clamps and regular tripods.

The KIRK PZ-35.

I use the RRS plate, can't complain - although I only attach it when I'm using the tripod (rarely)

Centering the mound makes it so much easier to adjust too.

Cheers,

Michael

I second the RSS plate for several reasons. A friend on this forum had his whole bottom plate rip out of the M9 while it was on a tripod. When you use the RSS plate, you are replacing the Leica bottom plate. Even though the weak connection points on the bottom of the Ms still exist, having the socket centered puts a lot less pressure on them. What I don't like about the attached grip versions shown in this thread is that they raise the attachment point, which again puts more force on the connection points. There is also a right angle addition you can attach to the RSS plate that lets you mount the camera on the tripod in portrait mode.

Keep in mind that this is not the case with the film M's. The RRS plate attaches to the original socket.

I really like  Tom & Tuulikki Abrahansson's RapidWinder for its primary function, and it centers the tripod socket. (I use it with his grip, too.) Of course we are unlikely to use the winder when on a tripod. That's just fine.

An alternative is the Leica Motor M which also centers the tripod socket. All my Leicas have either a RapidWinder or Motor M.

I use this on the camera -  http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/Shop/M2-M3-M4-M5-M6-M7/B30-Plate-for-M-series-not-M8-9.html

And an older version of this on the tripod head - http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/Shop/Lever-Release-Clamps/B2-LR-II-Lever-release-clamp.html

These two components when used together work like a charm.  The B30 plate has a wide spectrum of applicability; it works on M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7 and MP cameras.  The M8, M9, M240, M-P and Monochrom use a different plate.

1/8" aluminum plate -1/4-20 tapped hole for tripod socket-walled out 1/4" hole in plate for camera base-rubber/cork gasket material and glue from auto parts store.

looks like Cr@#$% but does prevent heart attacks. More refinements after vacation trials.
