thighslapper Posted May 16, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2015 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) For those who may be interested ....... Took a sequence of shots this afternoon with all three cameras using the 50/2 apo and 21/3.4 ...... tripod mounted and with as similar lighting conditions as the British weather allows M240 shots are a straight B&W conversion in LR. I am NOT interested at ALL in the original unprocessed images ...... it's what you can extract from the basic DNG's in processing that counts .... and as we have seen with various Leica cameras some files are just much more compliant and malleable than others. The M240 and MM246 produce slightly more exposed OOC files than the MM ........ so I ran another set with -1ev compensation in and picked the ones that were closest and then tweaked the exposure in LR to get them equal.... ish. I have sharpened and noise reduced the final images to get the best results I can without introducing noticeable artefacts or other issues. It was quite noticeable that the original MM files (at close to base ISO anyway) need much less NR..... although none needed much and what there was, was hardly noticeable.... Started off at 320 with all 3 cameras ........ these are the originals , then 2 sets of 100% crops. Can't think of a way of compensating for the lower res of the of the MM images ..... upsizing and downsizing both have issues...... Anyway ...... these are the first set ...... will post the higher iso and 21/3.4 images in batches over the weekend if I get time between gardening duties . I'm not commenting ...... you can decide what you want for yourselves ..... MM246 iso 320 Welcome, dear visitor! pedaes Posted May 16, 2015 Share #8 Posted May 16, 2015 Thanks for posting, a very interesting set. Scary how good the M241 (?240) images are even in the shadow areas where the MM should excel. I think you would probably need to compare A3+ prints to properly evaluate any differences at these ISO values.

BerndReini Posted May 16, 2015 Share #10 Posted May 16, 2015 Well then. I'll just go out and take some photographs and never buy another camera again? Money is definitely better spent on the 50mm APO if you already own any digital M camera. there I said it.
Lenshacker Posted May 16, 2015 Share #11 Posted May 16, 2015 That's the thing with digital- turnover of new models is quick, and performance gains at base and moderate ISO has leveled off. I think you will find the big gain with theM246 at High-ISO, I believe that is what the camera is optimized for.
wilfredo Posted May 16, 2015 Share #12 Posted May 16, 2015 Thanks for posting these. I think these will help folks decide what "look" they like best, or if in the end it doesn't really make any significant difference. I would love to see the same test using a human subject. jrbelmuda Posted May 16, 2015 Share #13 Posted May 16, 2015 Really good of you to make this effort, I have been torn over the last week whether to go ahead with upgrading my MM or not and this helps a lot. regards, JRB
thighslapper Posted May 16, 2015 Author Share #14 Posted May 16, 2015 These are 3200 iso files Decided on a big jump ...... so the differences become more apparent....... I have tried to get the best balance between sharpening and NR that I can ...... preserving as much detail as possible and keeping noise as low as possible within reason ....... a matter of taste and opinion I know, but I've done the best I can ..... platypus Posted May 16, 2015 Share #20 Posted May 16, 2015 (edited) What a fascinating post! Three incredible cameras with so little between them....it would be extremely interesting to see these tests as prints. So....I had been planning to place an order for the "new" MM, however, since reading (and digesting) the various reviews I had actually arrived at the conclusion that my ( self perceived) need for the camera is not sufficiently great that it justifies the seriously selfish financial outlay. This excellent and informative post has provided visual confirmation of that reality.....so it's onwards and upwards with the M9 and old MM! Thanks for the time and trouble you have expended on producing these examples! Edited May 16, 2015 by platypus
