This new and improved Leica Forum doesn't seem to be able to handle the same file size as before, hence I'm posting these seperately.

Hi Wilfredo,

i was pondering your question before I looked at the photos, and one of the word that comes to mind from my total ignorance of Harlem is "treeless." I imagine a treeless, innercity type of place that's grey most of the time. I wasn't really expecting to see the Globe Trotters.

I'm very glad to see some real photos of Harlem, including evidence of trees and spring, and images symbolizing hope.

One of the beauties of Harlem is tree lined blocks, and glorious brownstones.  The trees in Spring are stunning.   I live in a tenement building, but if I had the means, I would purchase a brownstone apartment, they are simply beautiful, and full of character.  The golden age of jazz must have been quite the experience for those who lived it. There's plenty of Jazz in Harlem today.

Harlem is undergoing a renaissance, but the downside is gentrification, which means that low and moderate-income people get priced out.  It is hopeful to see Harlem make a comeback, but there is a lot of work to do here, and in the City of New York, so that all the residents can have a slice of the apple.  Affordable housing is a major issue.

BTW, there are tons of churches in Harlem!

I was reading about the history of your church, and imagining the culturally diverse community where you work and live, and those imaginings have been elaborated both by your pictures and your description here.

I would love to see it for real--so welcome a relief from Calgary's vinyl clad pre-fabricated human residential modules that no amount of lovin' can make homes from houses.
