Louis Posted May 3, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 3, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I remember when I bought my D-Lux 3, I had over $100 money return after a few months! Now, I see everywhere 109 being sold with an over $140 discount!... I wonder if leica would return that amount to those who purchased it in full price ( as it did with DL3) since this camera is relatively new?... That would be very appreciated! colonel Posted May 5, 2015 Share #4 Posted May 5, 2015 I think there is zero chance of that. Cameras come down in price all the time
satureyes Posted June 15, 2015 Share #5 Posted June 15, 2015 Dont agonise over things like this. When I see this happen, I get a bit annoyed but then I see the images that I captured with whatever camera it may have been and how If I would have waited until now to buy I possibly wouldn't have those shots. Be grateful you have had the camera for long enough and to have enjoyed it for longer than someone purchasing it today.
ChrisRL Posted July 8, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 8, 2015 (edited) Louis, hi! I sympathize. The Leica brand should stand for something more. I gave up my Ms more than three decades ago, and find today to my surprise that they are still holding their value when all around them the other brands are doing exactly what the others in this thread have said. They're cameras. They devalue over time. But Leicas were meant to be proof against that. Well, indeed they are. Those Leicas, built in that era. One solid hunk of metal, milled to perfection, like a Rolex. The main piece of plastic in them was the film. This is 2015. Who wears Rolexes any more? My GMT Master, bought in the 70's for just over a thousand, is now worth seven. Who would buy a used old Rolex for even half that amount? The kind of person who would buy a Leica. Back then. But today? A three-year warranty on a Leica is a little like a four-year warranty on a Rolls Royce. They used to be lifetime warrantied, and indeed one can get one's M2 or M3 serviced with zero problems or issues. Try that with a digital Leica. My D2 is officially "oops, we ran out of parts - sorry" as of April this year. But I thought it was a Leica? Well, apparently not. Mostly it's franchised goods now, and I suppose it has to be because E. Leitz never made electronics, just put glass and metal and leather together like few others, before or since. At least they're not into manufactured obsolescence, like some of the other modern manufacturers these days. So you want a set of cameras that will last forever? M3/4 body, 35mm Summicron, 50 Elmarit, 90 Summicron lenses, decent 35mm scanner, done. You should be able to get all of that kit used for the price of a new M240 or MP digital body, and still have change for film. A lot of film. Digital? Three year warranty, but now on available a sliding scale discount to encourage those to adopt late to buy now, while stocks last, buy, buy, buy! Also done. Louis Posted July 8, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted July 8, 2015 Chris, you are absolutely right; this is exactly what I have been thinking! When I look at other brands and see, for instance, Fuji X-T1, I wonder why leica is not able of making such a capable camera! ... What happened to the famous German engineering!? ... As a kid, I had a Zeiss camera and I wish I kept it! ... It is really sad; I always dreamed of leica since childhood!... But.....

ChrisRL Posted July 8, 2015 Share #10 Posted July 8, 2015 On today's Craigslist and eBay M2 w/Collapsable 50 $1200 35mm Cron v3 M $980 90mm Elmarit M $450 Nikon V-ED scanner $775 $3405 At Leica DC today Pre-owned Leica M body, silver or black $6000 Leica ME on CL $4900 body only Film & dev budget $1695-2595 It's my contention that in 2035, 35mm film will still be around in some form or another, and so will parts for the M2 and the lenses. The scanner, not so sure about. The M and ME? Perhaps. Let's hope so, because these too are destined to be classical cameras. So the M2 and lenses will probably depreciate more, but as I've mentioned, those prices are still pretty much what they were 20-30 years ago, give and take, on the used market. Hopefully as time passes and the latest and greatest 50, 100, 1kMP cameras come out, the M and ME will settle down in terms of their used values and hold their end up as the D2 did (until Leica ran out of parts for it). But the other D-luxes? V-luxes and all those other Panasonic variants with the red dots ?
Louis Posted July 8, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted July 8, 2015 I must admit, when I bought my first do (d-lux3), I had no idea it was made in Japan by Panasonic!... Then, every time a new DL came, I sold my old one a very little less than when I bought and therefore, the new version costed me about $50!... The selling value of the red dot!...
